Robert Manning (engineer)
Robert Manning (22 October 1816 Р9 December 1897) was an Irish hydraulic engineer best known for creation of the Manning formula. Manning was born in Normandy, France, the son of a soldier who had fought the previous year at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1826 he moved to Waterford, Ireland and in time worked as an accountant. In 1846, during the year of the great famine, Manning was recruited into the Arterial Drainage Division of the Irish Office of Public Works. After working as a draughtsman for a while, he was appointed an assistant engineer to Samuel Roberts later that year. In 1848, he became district engineer, a position he held until 1855. As a district engineer, he read "''Trait̩ d'Hydraulique''" by d'Aubisson des Voissons, after which he developed a great interest in hydraulics. Du Buat
Count Pierre-Louis-George du Buat (23 April 1734 – 17 October 1809) was a French military engineer who worked on problems in hydraulics and hydrodynamics. He examined the flow of water and came up with a mathematical formulation defining the rate of flow of water through pipes which he published in ''Principes d’hydraulique, vérifiés par un grand nombre d’expériences faites par ordre du gouvernement.'' Early life and engineering Du Buat came from a noble family and was born in a manor at Buttenval, Tortisambert in Normandy. He was educated at the Royal School of Engineering in Mézières in 1750 and became a military engineer at the age of 17. He began his first work in the construction of canals of the Lys and the Aa. Henry Philibert Gaspard Darcy (, 10 June 1803 – 3 January 1858) was a French engineer who made several important contributions to hydraulics, including Darcy’s law for flow in porous media. Early life Darcy was born in Dijon, France, on June 10, 1803. His first given name is ''Henry''; although the French spelling ''Henri'' appears in multiple sources such as necrological notices, Darcy used the Anglicized spelling. Despite his father's death in 1817 when he was 14, his mother was able to borrow money to pay for his tutors. In 1821 he enrolled at the ''École Polytechnique'' (Polytechnic School) in Paris, and transferred two years later to the School of Bridges and Roads, which led to employment in the Corps of Bridges and Roads. Julius Weisbach
Julius Ludwig Weisbach (born 10 August 1806 in Mittelschmiedeberg (now Mildenau Municipality), Erzgebirge, died 24 February 1871, Freiberg) was a German mathematician and engineer. Life and work Weisbach studied at the '' Bergakademie'' in Freiberg from 1822 - 1826. After that, he studied with Carl Friedrich Gauss in Göttingen and with Friedrich Mohs in Vienna. In 1831 he returned to Freiberg where he worked as mathematics teacher at the local Gymnasium. In 1833 he became teacher for Mathematics and the Theory of Mountain Machines at the Freiberg ''Bergakademie''. In 1836 he was promoted to Professor for applied mathematics, mechanics, theory of mountain machines and so-called ''Markscheidekunst''. The capstan equation or belt friction equation, also known as Euler-Eytelwein's formula (after Leonhard Euler and Johann Albert Eytelwein), relates the hold-force to the load-force if a flexible line is wound around a cylinder (a bollard, a winch or a capstan). Because of the interaction of frictional forces and tension, the tension on a line wrapped around a capstan may be different on either side of the capstan. A small ''holding'' force exerted on one side can carry a much larger ''loading'' force on the other side; this is the principle by which a capstan-type device operates. Mary Ruth Manning
Mary or May Ruth Manning (1853 – 27 January 1930) was an Irish landscape painter and teacher. Life Mary Ruth (May) Manning was born in Dublin in 1853, the daughter of engineer Robert Manning and Susanna (née Gibson). Apart from a period of time living in Hampstead, London from 1889 to 1892, Manning lived in the family home at Ely Place from 1880. One of her sisters, Georgina Manning (aka Geraldine) was a suffragette who vandalised a bust of John Redmond at a Royal Hibernian Academy exhibition in 1913. Neither Manning nor her sisters married, living in Ely Place until after their father's death, and then on Winton Road, Lesson Park. She died there on 27 January 1930. Manning Formula
The Manning formula or Manning's equation is an empirical formula estimating the average velocity of a liquid flowing in a conduit that does not completely enclose the liquid, i.e., open channel flow. However, this equation is also used for calculation of flow variables in case of flow in partially full conduits, as they also possess a free surface like that of open channel flow. All flow in so-called open channels is driven by gravity. It was first presented by the French engineer in 1867, and later re-developed by the Irish engineer Robert Manning in 1890. Thus, the formula is also known in Europe as the Gauckler–Manning formula or Gauckler–Manning–Strickler formula (after ).
