Robert Little (Flying Tiger)
Robert Laing "Bob" Little (died May 22, 1942) was an American fighter pilot and double ace with the Flying Tigers, credited with 10, 10.5 or 10.55 victories. He was a native of Spokane, Washington, and attended North Central High School in 1935 and 1936. Little resigned from the United States Army Air Corps 8th Pursuit Group to join the Flying Tigers in the days before the United States entered World War II. He was one of the few Flying Tigers with prior experience with the Curtiss P-40 fighter, having logged 375 hours. In 1942, he was credited with downing Nakajima Ki-27 fighters on January 29 and February 6, 25 and 26, as well as a Nakajima Ki-43 fighter on April 8. He was killed while on a ground attack mission at the Salween River Gorge south of Baoshan. Wingman R. H. Robert Neale (pilot)
Robert Hawthorne Neale (May 3, 1914 – 1994) was the top flying ace with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), amassing 13 victories. Neale left his studies at the University of Washington to enlist in the United States Navy in 1938. He became an aviator, receiving his wings in 1939, and was a dive-bomber pilot on the aircraft carrier , flying the Curtiss SBC Helldiver and Douglas SBD Dauntless. Ensign Neale resigned his commission to join the AVG of the Chinese Air Force in June 1941. Neale took over the AVG's 1st Squadron (the "Adam & Eves") after its commander, Robert Sandy Sandell, was killed, and was decorated by the British government with the Distinguished Service Order for his exploits in the defense of Burma. Fighter aces in World War II had tremendously varying kill scores, affected as they were by many factors: the pilot's skill level, the performance of the airplane the pilot flew and the planes they flew against, how long they served, their opportunity to meet the enemy in the air (Allied to Axis disproportion), whether they were the formation's leader or a wingman, the standards their air service brought to the awarding of victory credits, et cetera. Towards the end of the war, the Axis powers had largely exhausted their supply of skilled pilots and the replacements did not have as much opportunity to gain enough experience to be successful. Additionally, national policies differed; German, Italian, and Japanese pilots tended to return to the cockpit over and over again until they were killed.
