Robert Law
Lieutenant-General Robert A. Law ( c. 1788 – May 16, 1874) was a British Army officer and colonial administrator for the colony of Newfoundland. Law was commissioned into the 71st Foot in 1809. He was promoted Lieutenant in 1811 and Captain in 1821. In 1822 he transferred to the 1st West India Regiment. He later transferred to the 83rd Foot and in 1824 to the Ceylon Regiment. In 1834 he was promoted Major and transferred to the Royal Newfoundland Veteran Companies, also being appointed commander of the garrison in Newfoundland. His responsibilities also required him to play a political role between the departure of Governor John Harvey and the arrival of Sir John Gaspar Le Marchant where he assumed the role as colonial administrator. Law dispensed relief to the victims of the 1846 fire at St. John's. He was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1844, Colonel in 1854, Major-General in 1859, and Lieutenant-General in 1868. Major-General
Major general (abbreviated MG, maj. gen. and similar) is a military rank used in many countries. It is derived from the older rank of sergeant major general. The disappearance of the "sergeant" in the title explains the apparent confusion of a lieutenant general outranking a major general, whereas a major outranks a lieutenant. In the Commonwealth and in the United States, when appointed to a field command, a major general is typically in command of a division consisting of around 6,000 to 25,000 troops (several regiments or brigades). It is a two-star rank that is subordinate to the rank of lieutenant general and senior to the rank of brigadier or brigadier general. In the Commonwealth, major general is equivalent to the navy rank of rear admiral. In air forces with a separate rank structure (Commonwealth), major general is equivalent to air vice-marshal. West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sun sets on the Earth. George Cadogan
General Sir George Cadogan (2 December 1814 – 27 January 1880) was a general in the British Army. Life The fifth son of George Cadogan, 3rd Earl Cadogan and Honoria Louisa Blake (and thus the younger brother of the 4th earl). He joined the Grenadier Guards as a lieutenant in 1833, and rose to Lieutenant colonel by 1847, serving with them in the Crimean War as British Liaison officer to the Sardinian Expeditionary Corps and produced watercolours of scenes he witnessed during the war. He served as Colonel to the 106th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Light Infantry) from 1870 to 1874 and then of the 71st (Highland) Regiment of Foot from 1874 to his death during which time he was promoted to full General (on 1 October 1877). Charles Grey (British Army Officer)
General Charles Grey (15 March 1804 – 31 March 1870) was a British army officer, member of the British House of Commons and political figure in Lower Canada. In later life, he served as private secretary to Prince Albert and later Queen Victoria. He was born in Northumberland, England, in 1804, the second son of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, by his wife, the Hon. Mary Ponsonby, daughter of William Ponsonby, 1st Baron Ponsonby. He was the younger brother of Henry, the 3rd Earl Grey. After a good private education he joined the British Army as a sub-lieutenant in 1820 and commanded the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1833 to 1842. Grey represented Wycombe in the British House of Commons from 1832 to 1837, defeating Disraeli to win the seat, which he held until 1837.
