Robert Laurie (bishop)
Robert Laurie or Lawrie MA (c.1606–1678) was a seventeenth-century Church of Scotland prelate. He was minister of Stirling before becoming, after the Restoration and the reinstitution of episcopal order in Scotland, Dean of Edinburgh. Life He was the son of Rev Joseph Laurie minister of Perth. He graduated MA from St Andrews University in 1636 and was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Perth in 1641. In 1644 he was ordained at Trinity College Church in Edinburgh an in 1648 translated to the nearby Tron Kirk and to the High Kirk of St Giles in 1662. In 1671 he became Bishop of Brechin, being consecrated at Holyrood House in Edinburgh on 14 July 1672. This was largely a nominal title was allowed to return to minister at Holy Trinity in 1674. He served as Bishop of Brechin until his death in March 1678. The historian Robert Keith referred to him as "a celebrated preacher, and a man of moderation". Robert Laurie (c. 1755–1836) was an Anglo-Scottish mezzotint engraver and publisher. He signed his name as Lowery, Lowry, Lowrie, Lawrey, Lawrie, or Laurie. Early years Born about 1755, his background was the Lauries of Maxwelltown, Maxwelton, Dumfriesshire. He received from the Society of Arts in 1770 a silver palette for a drawing from a picture, and in 1773, 1775, and 1776 premiums for designs of patterns for calico-printing. Work His earliest portraits in mezzotint are dated 1771. He was a relatively early British user of the à la poupée method of printing in colours, extending the number of colours considerably, and for this received from the Society of Arts in 1776 a bounty of thirty guineas. Early in 1794, in partnership with James Whittle, he succeeded to the business carried on by Robert Sayer at the Golden Buck in Fleet Street, London as a publisher of engravings, maps, charts, and nautical works. Robert Peter Laurie, (24 October 1835 – 29 July 1905) was a British Conservative Party politician. Laurie was educated at Tonbridge School and entered the banking business.Planck, p. 5. Volunteer service When an invasion scare in 1859 led to the rise of the Volunteer movement, Laurie joined the ranks of Queen Victoria's Rifles. One of the leaders of the movement was the journalist Alfred Bate Richards, who personally raised a 'Workmen's Brigade' in London. This unit was adopted as the 3rd City of London Rifle Volunteer Corps, and Laurie was one of the first officers commissioned, as a Captain, dated 26 April 1861. Sir Robert Laurie, 4th Baronet
Sir Robert Laurie 4th Baronet (1708–1779) of Maxwelton, Dumfries was a Scottish politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1738 to 1741 Laurie was the eldest son of Sir Walter Laurie, 3rd Baronet, of Maxwelton, and his first wife Jean Nisbet of Dean, Midlothian. He succeeded his father to the baronetcy on 23 November 1731. He married Christian Erskine, eldest daughter of Charles Erskine, of Alva, Clackmannanshire, and Tinwald, Dumfries, on 4 February 1733. Laurie was brought in by his father-in-law, Charles Erskine, as Member of Parliament for Dumfries Burghs at a by-election on 19 June 1738. He voted with the Administration on the Spanish convention in 1739 and on the place bill in 1740. He did not stand at the 1741 British general election. Laurie died on 28 April 1779 leaving a son and a daughter. Sir Robert Laurie, 5th Baronet (c. 1738 – 1804) was a Scottish soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1804. Laurie was the only son of Sir Robert Laurie, 4th Baronet and his wife Christian Erskine, daughter of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy on 28 April 1779. He joined the army in 1762 and was captain in the 71st Regiment of Foot (1758), 71st Foot. In 1765 he was a captain in the 7th Dragoon Guards and in 1771 a major. Sir Robert Laurie, 6th Baronet
Admiral Sir Robert Laurie, 6th Baronet KCB (25 May 1764 – 7 January 1848) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He rose through the ranks after his entry, fighting as a lieutenant under Howe at the Glorious First of June, and being wounded in the action. Shortly after he served in the West Indies and off the American coast, where he operated successfully against enemy raiders and privateers, he was rewarded with the command of the frigate , and in 1805 fought an action with a superior French opponent, ''Ville de Milan''. (Robert) Douglas Laurie (27 October 1874 – 17 April 1953) was the founder and first president of the Association of University Teachers. Career He was born in Birkenhead and educated at Birkenhead School. He took a job in a bank until 1899 before resuming his studies at Liverpool University before gaining a third class degree in zoology from Merton College, Oxford. After working as a demonstrator and assistant lecturer in the department of comparative anatomy at Oxford, he moved back to the University of Liverpool in 1906 also as a demonstrator and assistant lecturer. From 1911 he also lectured in embryology and genetics. During the First World War he served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and was twice mentioned in despatches.
