Robert Lahiffe
Robert Lahiffe (9 March 1909 – 8 March 1975) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and farmer. He served in the Oireachtas for 7 years as a Teachta Dála (TD), and then as a Senator for 8 years. Lahiffe was born in the townland of Cloone, Gort, County Galway, the son of James N. Lahiff and Maria Quinn. Lahiffe was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1948 general election as a Fianna Fáil TD for the Galway South constituency. He was defeated at the 1951 general election by Fine Gael's Patrick Cawley, but two years later was re-elected at a by-election in August 1953 following the death of Frank Fahy, a Fianna Fáil TD who as Ceann Comhairle had been returned unopposed in 1951. Lahiffe held the seat at the general election in 1954, but was ousted again at the 1957 general election. Seanad Éireann
Seanad Éireann (, ; "Senate of Ireland") is the upper house of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (the lower house). It is commonly called the Seanad or Senate and its members senators (''seanadóirí'' in Irish, singular: ''seanadóir''). Unlike Dáil Éireann, it is not directly elected but consists of a mixture of members chosen by various methods. Its powers are much weaker than those of the Dáil and it can only delay laws with which it disagrees, rather than veto them outright. It can introduce new legislation. 1954 Irish General Election
The 1954 Irish general election was held on Tuesday, 18 May to elect the 15th Dáil. The newly-elected members assembled at Leinster House on 2 June when the new Taoiseach and government were appointed. The general election took place in 40 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 147 seats in the lower house of parliament, Dáil Éireann. Campaign The general election of 1954 was caused by the loss of an overall majority for the ruling Fianna Fáil party in the Dáil. Rather than be voted down on a vote in the Dáil, Éamon de Valera decided to call a general election and let the people decide. Fianna Fáil had the most to lose, their campaign concentrated on providing political stability for the next five years. They also put forward strong arguments against coalition governments.
