Robert L. Rutherford
Robert Lynn Rutherford (December 11, 1938 – July 4, 2013) was a general in the United States Air Force who served as commander of the United States Transportation Command and of Pacific Air Forces. He was born in Luling, Texas. Military career Early career Rutherford entered the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1961 as a distinguished graduate of Texas State University's Reserve Officer Training Corps program. While in college, he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Upon graduation he married his college sweetheart Grace (Kita) Hyatt. They had two sons, Jim and Greg, and were happily married for more than 50 years. After graduation, he was a student in undergraduate pilot training, then flight instructor at Reese Air Force Base in Texas. During this time, he instructed students in the T-38 Talon. Luling, Texas
Luling is a city in Caldwell and Guadalupe counties, Texas, United States, along the San Marcos River. The population as of the 2020 census was 5,599. History The town was named after a New York banker, Charles Luling. He was a personal friend of Thomas Wentworth Pierce and provided the financing for the railroad as well the purchase of the land that became Luling. Luling was founded in 1874 as a railroad town and became a rowdy center for the cattle drivers on the Chisholm Trail. Contempt of the law by the cowboys helped Luling become known as the "toughest town in Texas". After the great cattle drives ended in the late 1880s, Luling quieted down to a town of about 500 and cotton ruled the local economy. George Air Force Base
George Air Force Base was a United States Air Force base located within the city limits, 8 miles northwest, of central Victorville, California, about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California. Squadron Officer School (SOS), is a 5.5-week-long Professional Military Education (PME) course for U.S. Air Force and Space Force Captains, Department of the Air Force Civilian (DAFC) equivalents and International Officers. It fulfills the U.S. Air Force's requirement for primary developmental education (PDE). SOS is based at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and the in-residence version of the course is taught there. SOS is an element of the Air University. SOS 2.0 Online was launched in 2017, and takes approximately 6 months to complete based on the required courses.
