Robert Knuckle
Robert Gordon Knuckle (February 15, 1935 – March 3, 2019) was a best-selling Canadian author, actor and playwright. He was a member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada. Knuckle was an educator for thirty-five years before he started writing full-time in 1992. He was an ACTRA award-winning author of ten books and two booklets. Most of his books are about true crime and/or tales of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who invested him as an honorary life member of their veterans association. He has also written for the stage, television, radio, and cinema. Nine of his thirteen-stage plays have been produced at major venues in Canada, USA, and in Europe, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. One of his true-crime books has been adapted into a movie which is presently in pre-production in Los Angeles. Bandit (film)
''Bandit'' is a 2022 Canadian biographical crime film directed by Allan Ungar and starring Josh Duhamel, Elisha Cuthbert, Nestor Carbonell and Mel Gibson. The film is based on the true life story of Gilbert Galvan Jr (also known as ''The Flying Bandit''), who still holds a record for the most consecutive robberies in Canadian history. The screenplay by Kraig Wenman is largely based on interviews and accounts featured in the 1996 true crime book ''The Flying Bandit'' by Robert Knuckle with Ed Arnold. Redbox Entertainment and Quiver Distribution acquired North American distribution rights to the film and released it in theatres and on demand on September 23, 2022. Eddie Slovik
Edward Donald Slovik (February 18, 1920January 31, 1945) was a United States Army soldier during World War II and the only American soldier to be court-martialled and executed for desertion since the American Civil War. Although over 21,000 American soldiers were given varying sentences for desertion during World War II, including 49 death sentences, Slovik's death sentence was the only one that was carried out. During World War II, 1.7 million courts-martial were held, representing one third of all criminal cases tried in the United States during the same period. Most of the cases were minor, as were the sentences. Nevertheless, a clemency board, appointed by the Secretary of War in the summer of 1945, reviewed all general courts-martial where the accused was still in confinement, and remitted or reduced the sentence in 85 percent of the 27,000 serious cases reviewed. Elgin And Winter Garden Theatres
The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are a pair of stacked theatres in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Winter Garden Theatre is seven storeys above the Elgin Theatre. They are the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world. History The pair of theatres were originally built as the flagship of Marcus Loew's theatre chain in 1913. The building was designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb, who also designed the Ed Mirvish Theatre nearby. Both theatres were built to show vaudeville acts and the short silent movies of the time. Each theatre was intended for a different class of patron. The gold-and-marble, domed, 'hard-top' lower theatre (originally called Loew's Yonge Street Theatre) was home to continuous vaudeville and movies. Gilbert Galvan
Gilbert William Galvan Jr. (born 1957) is an American bank robber. Having spent many of his adult years in prison, Galvan fled to Canada where he assumed the name Robert Lee Whiteman and began a three-year spree robbing banks and jewelry stores. The media dubbed him the Flying Bandit and the Phantom Bandit. Galvan's exploits were the subject of a 1996 true crime book, The Flying Bandit, written by Robert Knuckle and Ed Arnold, which was adapted into the 2022 film ''Bandit (film), Bandit''. Criminal career In the United States, Galvan had embezzled from Western Union. In 1984, he escaped from prison in St. Joseph County, Michigan, and fled to Pembroke, Ontario, where he took a new name, Robert Lee Whiteman, and claimed to be a computer salesman.
