Robert J. Kern
Robert James Kern (March 29, 1885 – May 30, 1972) was an American film editor with more than sixty feature film credits. He is known for editing ''National Velvet'' (1944), which won him the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. ''National Velvet'' was one of thirteen films that Kern edited with director Clarence Brown. He also made seven films with director W. S. Van Dyke, including three of the '' Thin Man'' series. Kern was nominated for the Academy Award for ''David Copperfield'' (1935), which was directed by George Cukor. His brother, Hal C. Kern, was also a film editor. As of 2017, they are the only instance of two brothers both winning an Academy Award for Best Editing. Hal Kern won for ''Gone with the Wind'' (1939). ''National Velvet'' is a 1944 American Technicolor sports film directed by Clarence Brown and based on the 1935 novel of the same name by Enid Bagnold. The Academy Award for Best Film Editing is one of the annual awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Nominations for this award are closely correlated with the Academy Award for Best Picture. For 33 consecutive years, 1981 to 2013, every Best Picture winner had also been nominated for the Film Editing Oscar, and about two thirds of the Best Picture winners have also won for Film Editing. In 1980, ''Ordinary People'' won as Best Picture, but its editor Jeff Kanew was not nominated for Best Editing. Only the principal, "Above-the-line (filmmaking), above the line" editor(s) as listed in the film's credits are named on the award; additional editors, supervising editors, etc. are not currently eligible. Clarence Brown
Clarence Leon Brown (May 10, 1890 – August 17, 1987) was an American film director. Early life Born in Clinton, Massachusetts, to Larkin Harry Brown, a cotton manufacturer, and Katherine Ann Brown (née Gaw), Brown moved to Tennessee when he was 11 years old. He attended Knoxville High School (Tennessee), Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee, both in Knoxville, Tennessee, graduating from the university at the age of 19 with two degrees in engineering. An early fascination in Car, automobiles led Brown to a job with the Stevens-Duryea, Stevens-Duryea Company, then to his own Brown Motor Car Company in Alabama. He later abandoned the car dealership after developing an interest in motion pictures around 1913. George Cukor
George Dewey Cukor (; July 7, 1899 – January 24, 1983) was an American film director and film producer. He mainly concentrated on comedies and literary adaptations. His career flourished at RKO when David O. Selznick, the studio's Head of Production, assigned Cukor to direct several of RKO's major films, including ''What Price Hollywood?''
