Robert Lindsay Hughes (born 19 August 1948 in Sydney, New South Wales) also billed variously as Bob Hughes and Robert Hughs, is an Australian-born British former actor, voice actor, and musician, whose most significant roles include ''ABBA: The Movie'' and the television sitcom ''Hey Dad..!''. In May 2014, he was convicted of sexual offences against children and sentenced to ten years, nine months' imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of six years. Early career Hughes first worked as a cadet journalist for ''The Sydney Morning Herald''. Hughes was briefly the bass player for the pop/country rock band The Flying Circus (band), the Flying Circus in 1967–68, billed as Bob Hughes, before they had hits with the songs "Hayride" and "La La". Hughes made his debut for Herefordshire in the 1998 MCCA Knockout Trophy against Wiltshire in 1998. From 1998 to 2004, he represented the county in 19 Trophy matches, the last of which came against Wiltshire. His Minor Counties Championship debut came against Oxfordshire in 1999. Robert Patterson Hughes (April 11, 1839 – October 27, 1909) was an American military officer. He served from 1861 until 1903 and attained the rank of major general. A native of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, he was educated at local academies and taught school before attending Jefferson College. He left college to join the Union Army for the American Civil War, and rose to the rank of colonel by brevet. After the war, Hughes received a commission in the United States Army. He participated in engagements of the American Indian Wars, and served for several years as aide-de-camp to his Alfred Terry, who became his brother-in-law. By the mid-1880s, Hughes had been promoted to major and began to serve in various commands as an inspector general. Robert Clinton Hughes (July 1847 – 18 January 1935) was a New Zealand lawyer and conservationist. Hughes was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1847, but the family moved to New Plymouth when he was a young child. He was a lawyer by trade and had his own practice from 1870 when he was admitted to the bar. From July 1874 until the abolition of the provincial government system in 1876, he represented the Town of New Plymouth electorate on the Taranaki Provincial Council. Subsequently, he served on the New Plymouth borough council. He was one of three candidates in the contesting the electorate, and he came last. Dr. Robert Arthur Hughes, M.B.Ch.B, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., F.R.C.S., O.B.E., (3 December 1910 – 1 June 1996) was a medical missionary for the Presbyterian Church of Wales who worked in Shillong from 1939–1969 at the Welsh Mission Hospital, also known as the Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, Shillong. Hughes trained as a surgeon in London prior to his time in India. He is called the "Schweitzer of Assam," comparing his missionary work to that of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer. Robert Earl Hughes (December 15, 1930 – October 11, 2012) was an American water polo player and breaststroke swimmer who competed in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics. He was born in Lennox, California. He attended the University of Southern California (USC), where he swam for the USC Trojans swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition. Hughes was a member of the U.S. water polo team which finished fourth in the 1952 tournament. He played in all nine matches for the U.S. team. Four years later he finished fifth with the American team the water polo tournament at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. He played five matches. He also participated in the 200-meter breaststroke, but did not advance beyond the preliminary heats. In 1976, he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
