Faust (1926 Film)
''Faust – A German Folktale'' (German: ) is a 1926 silent film produced by Ufa, directed by F. W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic 1808 version. Ufa wanted Ludwig Berger to direct ''Faust'', as Murnau was engaged with ''Variety''; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the film. ''Faust'' was Murnau's last German film, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct '' Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans'' (1927); when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood. It has been praised for its special effects and is regarded as an example of Germa ...

Tartuffe (1926 Film)
''Tartuffe'' (''Herr Tartüff'') is a German silent film produced by Erich Pommer for UFA and released in 1926. It was directed by F. W. Murnau, photographed by Karl Freund and written by Carl Mayer from Molière's original play. It was shot at the Tempelhof Studios in Berlin. Set design and costumes were by Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig. The film starred Emil Jannings as Tartuffe, Lil Dagover as Elmire and Werner Krauss as Orgon. Based on the play ''Tartuffe'', the film retains the basic plot, but Murnau and Mayer pared down Molière's play, eliminating most of the secondary characters and concentrating on the triangle of Orgon, Elmire and Tartuffe. They also introduced a framing device, whereby the story of Tartuffe becomes a film-within-a-film, shown by a young actor as a device to warn his grandfather about his unctuous but evil housekeeper. Cast Restoration and home video Like all Murnau's surviving films, ''Tartuffe'' is licensed by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murna ...

''The Last Laugh'' (german: Der letzte Mann, ) is a 1924 German silent film directed by German director F. W. Murnau from a screenplay written by Carl Mayer. The film stars Emil Jannings and Maly Delschaft. Stephen Brockmann summarized the film's plot as, "a nameless hotel doorman loses his job".Prager, Brad. A critical history of German film. Monatshefte, Volume 103, No. 3 (Fall 2011), pp. 472-474; (p.473) It is a cinematic example of the ''Kammerspielfilm'' or "chamber-drama" genre, which follows the style of short, sparse plays of lower middle-class life that emphasized the psychology of the characters rather than the sets and action. The genre tried to avoid the intertitles (title cards) of spoken dialogue or description that characterize most silent films, in the belief that the visuals themselves should carry most of the meaning. In 1955, the film was remade starring Hans Albers. The film was voted number 11 on the prestigious Brussels 12 list at the 1958 World Expo. P ...
