Robert Hebert Quick
Robert Hebert Quick (30 September 1831 – 1891) was an English educator and writer on education. Political history was the usual venue for Whig history of the sort that presented the past as a story of achievements accumulating to the present stage. However, Quick and G. A. N. Lowndes were the leaders of the Whig school of the history of education. In 1898 Quick explained the value of studying the history of educational reform, arguing that the past accomplishments were cumulative and "would raise us to a higher standing-point from which we may see much that will make the right road clearer to us". Life Born in Harrow, London, he was the eldest son of James Carthew Quick, a prosperous merchant. Whig History
Whig history (or Whig historiography) is an approach to historiography that presents history as a journey from an oppressive and benighted past to a "glorious present". The present described is generally one with modern forms of liberal democracy and constitutional monarchy: it was originally a satirical term for the patriotic grand narratives praising Britain's adoption of constitutional monarchy and the historical development of the Westminster system. The term has also been applied widely in historical disciplines outside of British history (e.g. in the history of science) to describe "any subjection of history to what is essentially a teleological view of the historical process". When the term is used in contexts other than British history, "whig history" (lowercase) is preferred. John Archibald Venn
John Archibald Venn (10 November 1883 – 15 March 1958) was a British economist. He was President of Queens' College, Cambridge, from 1932 until his death, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University 1941–1943, university archivist, and author, with his father, of '' Alumni Cantabrigienses''. His father was logician John Venn (the creator of the Venn diagram). Venn was educated at Eastbourne College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He took his honours in the History Tripos in 1904–1905. During the First World War he was a lieutenant for three years in the Cambridgeshire Regiment and then served as a statistician in the Food Production Department. He served on the Scientific Council of the International Institute of Agriculture and many other Departmental committees of the Ministry of Agriculture. Frederick James Quick
Frederick James Quick (22 October 1836 — 21 December 1902) was a wholesale dealer in tea and coffee in the City of London, chairman of the firm Quick, Reek, and Smith. He left most of his fortune to the University of Cambridge to promote the interests of biology and botany, which led to the establishment in 1906 of the Quick Chair in Biology. Early life Quick was born in London in 1836, the second son of James Carthew Quick, a wholesale coffee dealer, and was baptized at St Giles's, Camberwell, on 18 November. He was educated at Harrow School, from 1851 to 1855, and then at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he arrived in October 1855 and graduated Bachelor of Arts on 29 January 1859.
