Sir Robert Gunning, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Gunning, 1st Baronet (8 June 1731 – 22 September 1816) was a British diplomat. He served as the British minister in Denmark 1765–1771, in Prussia in 1771 and in Russia 1772–1776. Gunning was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath on 9 July 1773 and the first Baronet of Eltham in the County of Kent on 27 October 1778. Family The Gunnings were an Irish family. His country seat was at Horton in Northamptonshire, England, which he purchased 1782; he was the eldest son of Robert Gunning - and his mother was Catherine, the daughter of John Edwards. The family was descended from Richard Gunning, who was an uncle of Peter Gunning, the Bishop of Ely who had settled in Ireland in the time of James I. The Gunning family stayed at Horton Hall until 1888 when it was sold to Pickering Phipps, the Northampton brewer. Later still, it was sold to George Winterbottom. Robert Halliday Gunning FRSE Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh, PRPSE FSA Legum Doctor, LLD (12 December 1818 – 22 March 1900) was a Scottish surgeon, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He did much to improve social conditions in Brazil and also became rich there. He endowed numerous prizes and awards including the Gunning Victoria Jubilee Prizes. The University of Edinburgh provides scholarships under the title of Gunning Victoria Jubilee Bursaries. He was a close friend of both Thomas Chalmers and Robert Christison. Life He was born Richard Halliday Gunnion on 12 December 1818 at Wood House in Ruthwell on the southern coast of Dumfriesshire. He was the eighth of ten children of Elizabeth Affleck McWilliam and James Gunnion. In 1822 the family moved to Kirkbean on the opposite side of the River Nith and later to New Abbey before settling in Dumfries. He was educated at the local school in Ruthwell then Dumfries Academy. Gunning Fog Index
In linguistics, the Gunning fog index is a readability test for English writing. The index estimates the years of formal education a person needs to understand the text on the first reading. For instance, a fog index of 12 requires the reading level of a United States high school senior (around 18 years old). The test was developed in 1952 by Robert Gunning, an American businessman who had been involved in newspaper and textbook publishing. The fog index is commonly used to confirm that text can be read easily by the intended audience. Texts for a wide audience generally need a fog index less than 12. Texts requiring near-universal understanding generally need an index less than 8. The Infected (band)
The Infected (or simply, Infected) is one of the longest standing punk rock bands from Lexington, Kentucky, formed in 1993 and having released twelve albums and EPs. The band, signed on the Eugene Records label, went through many iterations, before going on hiatus in 2003 and returning in 2006 as "hometown heroes". History Infected or The Infected were formed by Nathan Waters aka Nasty Nate, Robert Gunning and Brandon Faukner in 1993. This was the lineup for the limited release of ''All the Shit You Hate'', recorded in 1994 and 1995. "Buff" Mike Nagiec joined to play bass in 1995, and Sean Degan joined as second guitarist later on. Faukner left in late 1996, citing creative differences, and Degan was pressed into drumming. This lineup released the band's first full-length studio LP, ''New Defiance'' and the notable "Alano" show, bootlegs of which are one of the few known live recordings of this version of the band. Northampton was a parliamentary constituency (centred on the town of Northampton), which existed until 1974. It returned two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom until its representation was reduced to one member for the 1918 general election. Gunning Baronets
The Gunning Baronetcy, of Eltham in the County of Kent, is a title in the Baronetage of Great Britain. It was created on 3 September 1778 for Robert Gunning, Minister Plenipotentiary to Berlin and St Petersburg. The second Baronet was Member of Parliament for Wigan, Hastings and East Grinstead while the third Baronet briefly represented Northampton. The seventh Baronet was a Brigadier-General in the British Army. Orlando George Gunning, grandson of Major John Gunning, sixth son of the second Baronet, was also a Brigadier-General in the Army. His son, Sir Orlando Peter Gunning, was knighted for his military and colonial service. The family name was originally Gonning or Gonnynge and can be traced to the hamlet of Tregonning, Cornwall.
