Bob Gray (Australian Politician)
Robert John Gray (8 March 1898 – 2 August 1978) was an Australian politician. He was born in Brunswick, Victoria, Brunswick to farmer Matthew Gray and Susan Jane Saggers. He served in World War I with the First Australian Imperial Force, AIF, and after the war studied commerce in London. In 1920 he married Emily Myrtle Ireland, with whom he had four children. He worked for Shire of Nunawading, Nunawading Shire Council and City of Box Hill, Box Hill City Council as a health inspector. In 1943 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in a by-election for the seat of Electoral district of Nunawading, Nunawading, representing the Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), Labor Party. He transferred to Electoral district of Box Hill, Box Hill in 1945, but was defeated in 1947. Robert Keith Gray (September 2, 1921 – April 18, 2014) was a Republican Party (U.S.), Republican activist and public relations executive who founded Gray and Company in 1981 after working with Hill & Knowlton. He was President Dwight D. Eisenhower's White House Cabinet Secretary. Early life and education Gray was born September 2, 1921, in Hastings, Nebraska, and graduated in 1943 from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota; he later graduated from Harvard University with a Masters in Business Administration. Robert Hampton "Hammy" Gray, , RCNVR (November 2, 1917 – August 9, 1945) was a Canadian naval officer, pilot, and recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC) during World War II, one of only two members of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm to have been thus decorated in that war. (The other was Eugene Esmonde, a British pilot.) Gray is the second to last Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Early life Gray was born in Trail, British Columbia, Canada, but resided from an early age in Nelson, where his father was a jeweller. Robert Gray (May 10, 1755 – ) was an American Merchant Sea Captain who is known for his achievements in connection with two trading voyages to the northern Pacific coast of North America, between 1790 and 1793, which pioneered the American maritime fur trade in that region. In the course of those voyages, Gray explored portions of that coast and in the year 1790 he completed the first American circumnavigation of the world. He was also noted for coming upon and naming the Columbia River, in 1792, while on his second voyage. Gray's earlier and later life are both comparatively obscure. He was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island, and may have served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. After his two famous voyages, he carried on his career as a sea captain, mainly of merchantmen in the Atlantic. Robert William Geoffrey Gray (born 23 February 1945) is an Australian poet, freelance writer, and critic. He has been described as "an Imagist without a rival in the English-speaking world" and "one of the contemporary masters of poetry in English". Biography Gray was born in Port Macquarie, grew up in Coffs Harbour and was educated in a country town on the north coast of New South Wales. He trained there as a journalist, and since then has worked in Sydney after settling in the 1970s as an editor, advertising copywriter, reviewer and buyer for bookshops. His first book of poems, ''Creekwater Journal'', was published in 1973. As a poet Gray is most notable for his keen visual imagery and intensely observed landscapes, known as a very skilful imagist. Robert Gray FRSE (15 August 1825 – 18 February 1887), was a Scottish banker and famed amateur ornithologist. Life Gray was born at Dunbar on 15 August 1825, the son of Archibald Gray, a Dunbar merchant. He was educated at the parish school in Dunbar. At the age of fifteen he became an apprentice in the branch of the British Linen Company Bank. Five years afterwards he joined the head office of the City of Glasgow Bank. Here he attained the position of inspector of branches, an appointment which had an important influence upon his scientific pursuits. From early years he had been addicted to the study of natural history. He soon adopted ornithology as his speciality. He became the inspector of the bank's branches and during his frequent inspections he studied the local birds. Robert Gray (3 October 1809 – 1 September 1872) was the first Anglican Bishop of Cape Town. Biography Gray was born in Bishopwearmouth, north east England, the 12th child and son of Robert Gray, Bishop of Bristol, who made him deacon in Wells Cathedral on 11 January 1834. His first parish was at Whitworth. In 1845 he became the vicar of Stockton-on-Tees. As a priest he was interested in mission, and was local secretary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. In 1847, he was consecrated Bishop of Cape Town in Westminster Abbey, along with three bishops for Australia, and arrived in his diocese, the boundaries of which were undefined, in February the following year. Robert Gray (1762–1834) was an English Bishop of Bristol. Life Born 11 March 1762, he was the son of Robert Gray, a London silversmith. Having entered St Mary Hall, Oxford, he graduated B.A. 1784, M. A, 1787, B.D. 1799, and D.D. 1802. Soon after 1790 he was presented to the vicarage of Faringdon, Berkshire. In 1796 he was appointed Bampton lecturer, and his discourses were published the same year, under the title of ''Sermons on the Principles upon which the Reformation of the Church of England was established''.
