Robert Furlonger
Robert William Furlonger (28 April 1921 – 19 January 2019) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. He was an Australian Ambassador to Indonesia (1972–1975), Australian Ambassador to Austria and Hungary (1975–1977) and the first Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (1977–1981). Career Furlonger joined the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of External Affairs in 1945 as a cadet. His cadetship was for two-years and included him being given a project researching the Free France movement. In December 1961 Furlonger was appointed the Australian Consul-General at Geneva and the Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations Office in Geneva. From 1972 to 1975 Furlonger was Australian Ambassador to Indonesia. During his post to Indonesia, he hosted the Prime Minister of Australia, William McMahon in Jakarta, Indonesia. . Balgowlah, New South Wales
Balgowlah is a suburb of northern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Balgowlah (or Bulgowlah) said to be an Aboriginal name for "North Harbour". The area now known as Balgowlah was known to the Aboriginals as Jilling. Balgowlah is located 12 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Northern Beaches Council, in the Northern Beaches region. Balgowlah shares the postcode 2093 with the adjacent suburbs of Manly Vale, Balgowlah Heights and North Balgowlah. History Balgowlah was named in 1832 after an Aboriginal word meaning ''north harbour'' in reference to its position from Port Jackson. James Cumes
James William Crawford Cumes (23 August 1922 – 21 November 2013) was an Australian author and economist and a former public servant and diplomat. Life and career Cumes was born in Rosewood, Queensland in August 1922. He was educated at Wooloowin State School and Brisbane Grammar School, before matriculating to the University of Queensland. During World War II, Cumes was in the Australian Army, and fought on the Kokoda Track. Over the course of his diplomatic career, Cumes was High Commissioner to Nigeria (1965–1967), Ambassador to Belgium (1975–1977), Ambassador to Austria and Hungary (1977–1980), and Ambassador to the Netherlands (1980–1984). In his 1988 book ''A Bunch of Amateurs'', Cumes critiqued the performance of Australia's foreign ministers, offering an unfavourable assessment of then Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Bill Hayden. List Of Australian Ambassadors To Hungary
The Ambassador of Australia to Hungary is an officer of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the head of the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia in Hungary. The Australian Government established an embassy in Budapest in October 1984, and appointed its first resident Ambassador, Oliver Cordell. Previously, responsibility for Australian diplomatic representation in Hungary was held in Austria (1971–1985). At the time, Bill Hayden, then Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, said that closer ties with Hungary could help Australia to encourage dialogue between the United States and the Soviet Union on matters such as disarmament. The Australian Embassy in Budapest closed in July 2013. The Government at the time said the closure was because of budget constraints.
