Robert Fitzgerald (Australian Politician)
Robert George Dundas Fitzgerald (5 January 1846 – 24 December 1933) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician. He was born at Auckland to cotton planter Robert Appleyard Fitzgerald and Isabella Stevenson. The family moved to New South Wales in 1851 and Fitzgerald attended Sydney Grammar School and also a private school at Muswellbrook. He then became a solicitor's clerk in Maitland and was admitted a solicitor in 1869. In 1870 he married Elizabeth Frances Mary Batten, with whom he had a daughter. He established a partnership in Muswellbrook, and served as a local alderman (1871–73, 1878–80, 1885–86) and mayor (1878–79). In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as one of the two members for Upper Hunter. William Montgomerie Fleming (19 May 1874 – 24 July 1961) was an Australian politician, who served in the Australian House of Representatives and the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Born in Avon Plains, Victoria to Scottish migrant and station manager John Fleming and his wife Helen (née Hastie), Fleming moved with his family to a farm near Walgett, New South Wales in 1882. Educated on the farm, private schools (including Cooerwull Academy) and at the University of Sydney, Fleming worked on the family farm while also employed as a journalist for various local newspapers. Thomas Williams (New South Wales Politician)
Thomas Henry Williams (2 May 1862 – 6 June 1953) was an English-born Australian politician. The son of Thomas and Mary Williams, he arrived in Victoria in 1870. He worked as a drover from Queensland through New South Wales south to Victoria, before engaging in a speculation in Western Australia that saw him lose severely. He worked his transport back to Melbourne by shearing, fencing and tank sinking. On 9 February 1889 he married Rosina Victoria Beaudoin, with whom he had eight children. He was involved in the founding of the Shearers' Union, serving as secretary of the Scone branch in 1891. William Edward Abbott (1 April 1844 – 14 November 1924) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Upper Hunter as a Protectionist in 1890 and served as president of the Council of the Pastoralists' Union and the Pastoralists' Federal Council of Australia. Thomas Hungerford (6 September 1823 – 4 May 1904) was a pioneer pastoralist and politician in Australia. He was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Hungerford was born near Cork to Captain Emanuel Hungerford and Catherine Loan(e). The family migrated to New South Wales in 1828, and his father settled on the Hunter River. Hungerford became a pastoralist, owning property near Walgett and inheriting his father's Hunter property in 1852. On 19 June 1852 he married Emma Hollingsworth Wood, with whom he had nine children; a second marriage to Catherine Mary Mallon produced six children. John McLaughlin (5 June 1850 – 5 February 1918) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Westmeath to Daniel and Anne McLaughlin. The family migrated to New South Wales around 1852 and settled in the Hunter region. McLaughlin attended school at Maitland and then went to Lyndhurst College in Sydney. He became a solicitor's clerk in October 1874 and was admitted as a solicitor two months later. In 1882 he married Ada Moore, with whom he had four children. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Upper Hunter. He was defeated in 1885, but continued contesting elections for the next decade, becoming associated first with the Free Trade Party and then with the Protectionists. In 1895 he was elected the independent protectionist member for Raleigh. He retired in 1901, although he did later contest Raleigh once more in 1907 as an independent Liberal. John McElhone
John McElhone (16 June 1833 – 6 May 1898) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to milk vendor Terence McElhone and Catherine Mallon. He attended St Mary's Seminary School and was an apprentice seaman from 1851. In 1859 he was a commercial agent, and from 1867 to 1872 he was a merchant dealing with hide and tallow. On 5 February 1862 he married Mary Jane Browne, with whom he had nine children. Two of his sons, William Percy (1871–1932) and Arthur Joseph (1868–1946), each served as Lord Mayor of Sydney. A Sydney City alderman from 1878 to 1882, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1875 as the member for Upper Hunter. Bernhard Ringrose Wise (10 February 1858 – 19 September 1916), commonly referred to as B. R. Wise, was an Australian politician. William Herbert Wood (4 November 1869 – 30 May 1953) was an Australian politician. Born at Wallhollow, Victoria, to storekeeper Henry Gibson Wood, he attended schools in Victoria and Sydney before completing his secondary education at Sydney Grammar School and studying law at the University of Sydney. He entered his father's business and became an accountant. In 1894 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Eden-Bombala; he was a Protectionist from 1895 to 1901, an Independent from 1901 to 1904 and a Liberal thereafter. He was a captain in the 1st Australian Light Horse Regiment in 1900.
