Robert Emmet Smith
Robert Emmet Smith (August 21, 1914 – August 2, 1988) was an American art director and production designer. He was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Art Direction for the film '' King Rat''. Early life and career Robert Emmet Smith, also known as Bob Smith, was born to Edward Smith on August 21, 1914. Smith graduated from the University of Southern California School of Architecture and was a master mason. He established his career as a motion picture art director and production designer. His numerous credits include motion pictures such as Rio Lobo, Hombre, Lonely are the Brave, A Big Hand for the Little Lady, Operation Petticoat, and King Rat, which garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction in 1966. Bob Smith died in Newport Beach, California on Aug. 2, 1988. ''Operation Petticoat'' is a 1959 American World War II submarine comedy film in Eastmancolor from Universal-International, produced by Robert Arthur, directed by Blake Edwards, that stars Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. The film tells in flashback the misadventures of a fictional U.S. Navy submarine, USS ''Sea Tiger'', during the Battle of the Philippines in the opening days of the United States involvement in World War II. ''The Creature Walks Among Us'' is a 1956 American monster horror film and the third and final installment of the ''Creature from the Black Lagoon'' series from Universal Pictures, following the previous year's ''Revenge of the Creature''. The film was directed by John Sherwood, the long-time Universal-International assistant director, in his directorial debut. Jack Arnold, who had directed the first two films in the series, had moved on to "A-list" films, and felt he had no more to contribute to the horror genre. ''Behind the High Wall'' is a 1956 American film noir crime film directed by Abner Biberman starring Tom Tully and Sylvia Sidney. It featured an early performance by John Gavin who had just signed with Universal. It was sometimes referred to as his first film although he had appeared in ''Raw Edge'' under another name. The film is a story of crime on New York's waterfront. It is based on the non-fiction book ''The Man Who Rocked the Boat'', an autobiography by William Keating, played by Egan in the film. The book chronicles Keating's experiences as an assistant district attorney and as counsel to the New York City Anti-Crime Committee. In the portion of the book depicted in the film, Keating pursued a murder prosecution for a waterfront hit despite widespread corruption that stretched all the way into the district attorney's office. The title comes from the Richard Rodgers ballet of the same name, which was featured in the 1936 play ''On Your Toes''.
