Robert E. Lee Chancey
Robert E. Lee Chancey (December 16, 1880 – June 1, 1948) was a lawyer who served as mayor of Tampa, Florida. He was a member of the White Municipal Party. Robert E. Lee Chancey was born in Offerman, Georgia. He attended public schools and graduated from Mercer University in 1902 with a law degree. Chancey moved to Tampa in 1905 and worked for attorney, M.B. Macfarlane until 1918. He married Jennie Cortinio in Tampa in September 1910 and they had two sons. One was killed in an automobile accident leaving William B. as his only surviving son. Throughout his life he was socially and politically active. Chancey was a member of the Elks Club and the Knights of Pythias. Chancey was appointed county solicitor and served from 1916 to 1921 and a second time from 1923 to 1929. He was also the president of the Hillsborough County Bar Association. White Municipal Party
The White Municipal Party was a white supremacist political organization established in Tampa, Florida to eliminate African American influence in municipal elections. The group limited local elections to white candidates for many years by excluding African Americans from party membership and thereby blocking them from participating in primary elections where the eventual election winners were actually determined. The Modern Democrats were a political organization in Tampa, Florida. In 1935, members were arrested at a meeting and interrogated by police. Members of the group were then kidnapped outside the police station, beaten, tarred and feathered. Joseph Shoemaker died as a result of his wounds. The attack and death made national news. Six Tampa policemen were indicted and accused of being klansmen and taking part in the murder. The police chief was charged as an accessory for blocking the investigation. Patrick Crisp Whitaker (June 29, 1894 – 1965) was an American defense attorney who served in the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate including as Senate President. He led the defense of six Tampa policemen and the police chief accused of involvement in a deadly 1935 attack on a political group known as the Modern Democrats. His brother-in-law, R.E.L. Chancey was the Mayor of Tampa. His grandson is a lawyer in Sanford, Florida. He was born in Franklin, Georgia, the eldest of five siblings born to Georgia state legislator Daniel Brittain Whitaker. He graduated with a law degree from Georgetown University in 1915. He set up a law firm in Tampa in 1917. The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads.
