Robert Cowan (governor)
Robert Cowan (died 21 February 1737) was an Irish colonial administrator and the East India Company's Governor of Bombay from 1729 to 1734. He was a collateral ancestor of the Marquesses of Londonderry through the marriage of his sister, Mary Cowan, to Alexander Stewart, father of Robert Stewart, 1st Marquess of Londonderry. Cowan was descended from Ulster Scots Presbyterian stock, and his father, John Cowan, was an Alderman of the city of Derry. He entered the service of the East India Company some time before 1720 and retired in 1735, two years before his death. In 1721, he was involved in an unsuccessful campaign against Maratha Koli Admiral Kanhoji Angre. His personal fortune, amassed as governor, became part of the basis of the wealth of the Stewart family for generations. Robert Cowan (born September 5, 1983) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Early life Cowan was born in Calgary. He attended Robert Morris University and played with the Robert Morris Colonials, where he captained the NCAA college hockey team from 2004 to 2008, scoring one goal and 20 assists for 21 points, while earning 197 penalty minutes, in 123 games played. Rob Cowan (born 20 November 1950) is a British urbanist, writer, editor, speaker, consultant, cartoonist, illustrator and lexicographer. Career After working in housing research at the Planning Exchange in Glasgow and planning aid at the Town and Country Planning Association in London, Rob Cowan turned to journalism as editor of the TCPA's journal ''Town and Country Planning'' in 1982, editor of ''Roof'' (the magazine of the housing charity Shelter) from 1983 and at the '' Architects' Journal'' in various roles, including as acting editor in 1990.
