Sir Robert Bruce Cotton, 1st Baronet (22 January 1570/71 – 6 May 1631) of Conington Hall in the parish of Conington in Huntingdonshire, England,Kyle, Chris & Sgroi was a Member of Parliament and an antiquarian who founded the Cotton library. Origins He was born on 22 January 1571 in Denton, Huntingdonshire, the son and heir of Thomas Cotton (1544–1592) of Conington (son of Thomas Cotton of Conington Sheriff of Huntingdonshire in 1547) by his first wife Elizabeth Shirley, a daughter of Francis Shirley of Staunton Harold in Leicestershire. The Cotton family originated at the manor of Cotton, Cheshire, from which they took their surname. Sir Robert Cotton (2 May 1644 – 17 September 1717) was an English politician. He sat as a Member of Parliament from 1679 to 1701 and briefly in 1702. Life He was the third son of Sir Thomas Cotton, 2nd Baronet, the second by Sir Thomas's second wife Alice. He was granted the manor of Hatley, Cambridgeshire by his half-brother in 1662, the year of his father's death. He sat as a Member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire from 1679 to 1695, for Newport, Isle of Wight from 1695 to 1701 and briefly for Truro in 1702. He was selected as High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire for Jan–Nov 1688. There have been three Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Cotton, all in the Baronetage of England. One creation is extant as of 2008. The Cotton Baronetcy, of Conington in the County of Huntingdon, was created in the Baronetage of England on 29 June 1611 for the antiquary Robert Cotton, who also represented five constituencies in the House of Commons. The second Baronet sat as Member of Parliament for Great Marlow, St Germans and Huntingdonshire. The third and fourth Baronets both represented Huntingdon and Huntingdonshire in Parliament. Robert Henry Cotton (5 November 1909 – 17 January 1979) was an English cricketer. Cotton was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm fast. He was born at Birmingham, Warwickshire. Cotton made two first-class appearances for Warwickshire against Lancashire and Sussex in the 1947 County Championship. Against Lancashire, Cotton was dismissed in Warwickshire's first-innings of 207 for a duck by Eddie Phillipson, while in Lancashire's first-innings he opened the bowling, though went wicketless from his 25 overs which conceded 80 runs. He wasn't required to bat in Warwickshire's second-innings, with the match ending in a draw. Sir Robert Carrington Cotton, (29 November 191525 December 2006) was an Australian politician and diplomat. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served as a Senator for New South Wales from 1966 to 1978. He held ministerial office as Minister for Civil Aviation (1969–1972), Science and Consumer Affairs (1975), and Industry and Commerce (1975–1977). He later served as Consul-General in New York (1978–1982) and Ambassador to the United States (1982–1985). Early life Cotton was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1915. He was educated at St Peter's College, Adelaide and trained as a Royal Australian Air Force pilot in 1942 and 1943, but did not participate in action in World War II as he was seconded to the Department of Supply.
