Robert Charles Bell (engraver)
Robert Charles Bell (15 September 1806 – 5 September 1872) was a Scottish engraver. Life Bell was born at Edinburgh and at an early age he was articled to John Beugo, the friend of Robert Burns, and while in his studio he also attended the classes at the Trustees' Academy, then under the direction of Sir William Allan. After leaving Beugo he engraved a series of Scottish views and a considerable number of vignette portraits. Bell died in Edinburgh on 5 September 1872. His son, Robert Purves Bell, A.R.S.A., was a Scottish painter of figure subjects. William Mulready
William Mulready (1 April 1786 – 7 July 1863) was an Irish genre painter living in London. He is best known for his romanticising depictions of rural scenes, and for creating Mulready stationery letter sheets, issued at the same time as the Penny Black postage stamp. Life and family William Mulready was born in Ennis, County Clare. Early in his life, in 1792, the family moved to London, where he was able to get an education and was taught painting well enough so that he was accepted at the Royal Academy School at the age of fourteen. In 1802, he married Elizabeth Varley (1784–1864), a landscape painter. She came from a family of established artists; her brothers included John Varley, friend of William Blake, Cornelius Varley, and William Fleetwood Varley. John Faed
John Faed, R.S.A. (31 August 1819 – 22 October 1902) was a Scottish painter. Life John was the eldest son of the six children of James Faed, tenant of Barlay Mill, Galloway, and Mary Faed, ''née'' McGeoch. Two other sons, Thomas, and James, also became artists, as did his sister Susan. John began painting miniatures of local people when only nine years old. Until the age of 11, John attended Girthon Parish School. The ''Castle Douglas Weekly Visitor'' for 19 August 1831 recorded that at the examination of Girthon school "the company present were shown a beautiful and correct book of maps, executed by John Faed, as a specimen of his many and varied drawings, which often ere now have elicited the admiration of all who have seen them". He moved to Edinburgh in 1840 and in 1841 had his first exhibited work at the Royal Scottish Academy. Erskine Nicol
Erskine Nicol (3 July 1825 – 1904) was a Scottish figure and genre painter. Life He was born in Leith on 3 July 1825 the eldest son of James Main Nicol and his wife Margaret Alexander. His father rented a property on Lochend Road and worked in a wine merchant (Wauchope & Moodie) at 133 Constitution Street. The family moved to Fife Place on Leith Walk in the 1830s. After initial apprenticeship as a decorator he turned to art. He was a student at the Trustees' Academy on Picardy Place in Edinburgh, where he studied with Sir William Allan, and Thomas Duncan. On qualifying he initially taught as an Art Master at the old Leith High School. Nicol taught in Dublin, Ireland, from 1845–50, at the height of the Irish famine, and identified with the oppression of the Irish people and much of his work portrays the injustices inflicted upon the Irish population during the 19th century. Thomas Faed
Thomas Faed RSA (1826–1900) was a Scottish painter who is said to have done for Scottish art what Robert Burns did for Scottish song. Life Faed was born on 8 June 1826, at Barlay Mill in Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbrightshire, and was the brother of the artists James Faed, John Faed and Susan Faed. He received his art education in the school of design, Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1849. He went to London three years later, was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1861, and academician in 1864, and retired in 1893. He had much success as a painter of domestic genre, and had considerable executive capacity. In 1850 he was living at 16 Comely Bank in north Edinburgh with his brother James Faed, an engraver.
