Robert Campbell (New Zealand Politician)
Robert Campbell (8 January 1843 – 10 December 1889) was a 19th-century New Zealand Member of Parliament representing Oamaru ( Otago). Born near London, the son of Robert "Tertius" Campbell, he came to New Zealand in 1860. On 2 December 1868 in Christchurch, he married Emma Josephine Hawdon, the eldest daughter of Joseph Hawdon, a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council. (His wife's sister later married Edward Wingfield Humphreys.) Edward Wingfield Humphreys
Edward Wingfield Humphreys (1841 – April 1892) was a New Zealand member of parliament representing Christchurch North from 1889 to 1890. He was also a farmer in Otago, and his extended family included a number of political figures. Early life Humphreys was born in 1841 in Montgomeryshire, Wales. He was the second son of Erskine Humphrey, a barrister at law of Lincoln's Inn. He received his education at Harrow School, a boarding school in north-west London in the town of Harrow. He emigrated to New Zealand and settled in the Strath Taieri district for farming. He purchased several areas of land (''Six Mile'', ''Garthmyl'' and ''Gladbrook''), which were part of runs 213 and 213A. He married Alice Humphreys (née Hawdon), the second daughter of Hon. Charles Christie Graham (22 April 1835 – 27 December 1915) was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Otago, New Zealand. Biography Born on 22 April 1835 in Cupar, Fife, Scotland, Graham was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He emigrated to Victoria in Australia in 1855, and then moved to New Zealand in 1866. He represented the Oamaru electorate from an 1869 by-election to 1870, when he retired. New Zealand Legislative Council
The New Zealand Legislative Council was the upper house of the General Assembly of New Zealand between 1853 and 1951. An earlier arrangement of legislative councils for the colony and provinces existed from 1841 when New Zealand became a colony; it was reconstituted as the upper house of a bicameral legislature when New Zealand became self-governing in 1852, which came into effect in the following year. Unlike the elected lower house, the House of Representatives, the Legislative Council was wholly appointed by the governor-general. The New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 had authorised the appointment of a minimum of ten councillors. Beginning in the 1890s, the membership of the upper house became controlled by government of the day. As a result, the Legislative Council possessed little influence.
