Robert Breitbard
Robert Breitbard (April 28, 1919 – May 17, 2010) was an American football coach and professional sports owner. He served as the head football coach at San Diego State University in 1945. A member of the Greater San Diego Sports Council, Breitbard was instrumental in the construction of the San Diego Sports Arena. He was the first principal owner of the San Diego Rockets franchise of the National Basketball Association, which he owned from 1967 to 1972. The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. All of its current members are public universities, and upon UC San Diego's departure on July 1, 2020, all are members of the California State University system (two of them being Cal Polys). The 1945 San Diego State Aztecs football team represented San Diego State CollegeSan Diego State University was known as San Diego State College from 1935 to 1971. during the 1945 college football season. San Diego State did not field a team in 1943 and 1944 due to World War II. For this shortened first post-war season, San Diego State was again a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), but only two CCAA schools fielded a team so there was no champion named. The team was led by head coach Bob Breitbard in his first and only season with the Aztecs.Bob Breitbard was very prominent in San Diego sports. The 1945 college football season was the 77th season of intercollegiate football in the United States. Competition included schools from the Big Ten Conference, the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), the Southeastern Conference (SEC), the Big Six Conference, the Southern Conference, the Southwestern Conference, and numerous smaller conferences and independent programs. The season followed the end of World War II in August 1945, though many college players remained in military service. Western Hockey League (1952–74)
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL).
