This is a list of lawyers who held the rank of serjeant-at-law at the Irish Bar. Origins of the office of serjeant The first recorded serjeant was Roger Owen, who was appointed between 1261 and 1266, although the title itself was not commonly used in Ireland until about 1388; the earlier terms were "serviens", "King's Narrator" or "King's Pleader". The term Pleader was still in use in the 1470s. However, there is a reference to Richard le Blond as the King's "Serjeant pleader" in 1305 or 1306. In the early years of the office, appointment as serjeant might be temporary and might cover only a part of the country, although John de Neville was acting as Serjeant in 1295-6 "for all parts of Ireland". Blennerhassett Family
The Blennerhassett family is an English and Anglo-Irish noble family which has been involved in the politics of the Britain and Ireland since the fourteenth century. The male line of the family is extinct in Britain. History The family is recorded as having originally been settled in Cumberland in northern England, at the manor of Blennerhasset. The landowner John de Blennerhassett sat in the House of Commons of England as the Member of Parliament for Carlisle in 1381 and 1384, and his descendants represented the seat in almost every Parliament from the reign of Richard II to the reign of James I. In 1390 Alan de Blenerhayset secured a grant of arms from the Crown. In 1547 the Blennerhassett family relocated to Frenze, Norfolk and Barsham, Suffolk on former monastery lands. Court Of King's Bench (Ireland)
The Court of King's Bench (of Queen's Bench when the sovereign was female, and formerly of Chief Place or Chief Pleas) was one of the senior courts of common law in Ireland. It was a mirror of the Court of King's Bench in England. Arthur Blennerhassett (1687–1758)
Arthur Blennerhassett KC (1687 – 3 January 1758) was an Anglo-Irish lawyer, politician and judge. He is remembered mainly for killing John St. Leger in a duel.Ball pp.207-8 He was the only son of the politician and lawyer Robert Blennerhassett of Clonmel, County Tipperary, and Alice Osborne, daughter of Sir Thomas Osborne, 5th Baronet and Katherine Butler, and widow of Thomas Warter. He was at school in Dublin and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1708. The same year he entered the Middle Temple. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1714,Hart p.164 made King's Counsel in 1728,Hart p.164 and served as Prime Serjeant in 1742. In 1727 Blennerhassett was elected to the Irish House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Tralee. He was raised to the bench as a justice of the Court of King's Bench (Ireland) in 1743 and served until his death in 1758.
