Robert Allan (poet)
Robert Allan (4 November 1774 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish poet. Biography Allan was born at Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, where his father was a flax-dresser. He, himself, would later become a muslin-weaver. Early in life he began to write songs, chiefly in the Scottish dialect. He would often composing them while working at his loom. He received the praise of Tannahill, who, like himself, was a Renfrewshire weaver and songwriter. As time progressed, Robert Archibald Smith set to music many of his Scotch songs and published them in the ''Scottish Minstrel'' in 1820. A number of them additionally appeared in the ''Harp of Renfrewshire.'' A volume of Allan's poems was also printed by subscription in 1836. Allan reared a large family, and was poor, old, and discontented, when, in opposition to the advice of his friends, he sailed for the United States, where his youngest son was a portrait-painter of promise. Robert Alexander Allan, Baron Allan of Kilmahew, (11 July 1914 – 4 April 1979) was a British Conservative politician. Allan was educated at Harrow School, Clare College, Cambridge and Yale University. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during World War II and was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1942, a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1944, and was awarded the French Croix de guerre. Allan was Member of Parliament (MP) for Paddington South between 1951 and 1966. In 1958 and 1959, he was also Financial Secretary to the Admiralty. Sir Robert George Allan (7 November 1879 – 4 January 1972) was a British agricultural administrator in British India. Life He was born in India, the son of Alexander Allan (1839–1926) and his wife, Jemima Dalmahoy (1847–1884), thought to be a daughter of Patrick Dalmahoy. He was baptised in Madras. His mother died when he was very young. He was educated at Loretto School then at Haileybury and Imperial Service College (a school catered to training people for administrative service in India). He then studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge graduating MA. In 1907, he became Principal of the Nagpur Agricultural College in India. In 1926 he became acting director of Agriculture for the Central Provinces of India. In 1931 he became Director of Agriculture for the United Provinces of India. Robert Allan (trade Unionist)
Robert Allan was a Scottish trade unionist who served as leader of the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC). Allan worked as a compositor in Edinburgh, and joined the Social Democratic Federation. He was active in the Scottish Typographical Association (STA) and the Edinburgh Trades Council. He attended the STUC from its foundation, always taking a prominent part in debates. Allan was first elected to the General Council of the STUC in 1899, and on the council he championed the creation of a Scottish Labour Representation Committee, to stand Parliamentary candidates on behalf of the socialist, trade union and co-operative movements. This was formed as the Scottish Workers' Representation Committee, and Allan became its first secretary, although in 1902 he was replaced by leader of the STUC, George Carson. Robert Allan (1847 – 8 December 1927) was a prominent businessman and manufacturer of Christchurch, New Zealand. Early life Allan's parents arrived in New Zealand aboard the '' Thomas Harrison'' in 1842. Born in Nelson in 1847, Allan and his family moved to Wellington for several years and to Port Levy in 1851. The Allan family later settled in Lyttelton. Robert Allan FRSE FGS (12 October 1806 – 6 June 1863) was a British advocate, stockbroker and amateur mineralogist. He was author of A Manual of Mineralogy which set a benchmark within this field. Life He was born in Edinburgh on 12 October 1806, the son of Thomas Allan. He attended the High School in Edinburgh, and then studied law at the University of Edinburgh. In 1822, he met the German mineralogist Wilhelm Haidinger during his visit to Edinburgh, and who (together with his father) greatly influenced his views. All three were friends and went together on mineral-hunting expeditions both in Britain and in Europe. In 1828, he was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society due to his contributions to mineralogy. He was admitted an advocate at the Scottish Bar in 1829.
