Robbie Blackadder
Robert Blackadder (born 7 December 1955) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. He earned four international caps for the Australia national speedway team. Biography Blackadder, born in Cessnock, New South Wales, began his British leagues career riding for Newcastle Diamonds during the 1975 New National League season season. Newcastle had been re-formed by Ian Thomas and the club signed a new team ready for 1975, which included the Owen brothers (Joe and Tom Owen), in addition to the two Australian riders, Blackadder (aged 19) and Ron Henderson (aged 17). Blackadder made an immediate impact, supporting the Owen brothers and helping the Diamonds to the runner-up position behind Birmingham Brummies. The following season in 1976, the Newcastle team dominated and won the league and cup double and the fours. Joseph William Owen (born 13 September 1956) is a British former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Born in Ormskirk, Owen took up speedway at the age of fourteen at the training school at Belle Vue and made his competitive debut for Barrow Bombers in the British League second division in 1973.Oakes, Peter & Mauger, Ivan (1976) ''Who's Who of World Speedway'', Studio Publications, , p. 9 By 1974, he averaged over seven points per match and rode in the Young England team in matches against Australasia and Poland. Hull Vikings
The Hull Vikings were a speedway team from Hull, England, who operated primarily from The Boulevard (stadium) and Craven Park from 1971 to 2005. History The team originated as the Hull Angels and were based at Hedon Stadium in Hedon on the outskirts of Hull between 1947 and mid-1949. Their inaugural league season was in the 1948 Speedway National League Division Three where they finished 9th. The team withdrew during the 1949 season and were replaced by the Swindon Robins When speedway came back to Hull for the 1971 British League Division Two season, the team were known as the Vikings and raced at the Boulevard, a long track. Birmingham Brummies
Birmingham Brummies are a British speedway team founded in 1928. They were inaugural members of the Southern League in 1929. The team have twice finished runner-up in the highest tier of British speedway, during the 1952 Speedway National League and 2013 Elite League speedway season. After four years in the National League, in 2019 they moved up to the second tier of British speedway in the SGB Championship. History 1928–1986 Birmingham had two teams in the Southern League of the inaugural season of British speedway in 1929. One was based at Perry Barr Stadium and the other was based at Hall Green Stadium. The Hall Green team, known during their time as Birmingham Bulldogs, closed in 1938. Ronald Hillary Henderson (born 27 February 1957) is an Australian former motorcycle speedway rider. He earned two international caps for the Australia national speedway team. Career Henderson born in Brisbane, Australia, joined the Newcastle Diamonds training school as a 17-year-old in 1975. He began his British leagues career riding for the Diamonds during the 1975 New National League season. The following season in 1976, he helped Newcastle to the National League Championship. The Diamonds were his chief team, but he was also given rides with Hull and Swindon, as guest rider to cover absences. He quit the United Kingdom after the 1977 season. Returning to Australia, his last race was at Tivoli in Queensland in 1984, riding in four heats and winning all four. Tom Owen (born 19 June 1951) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Speedway career Owen rode in the top two tiers of British Speedway from 1972 to 1987, riding for various clubs. He won the National League Pairs, partnering Brian Havelock for the Newcastle Diamonds during the 1975 New National League season. In 1975 and 1976, he finished second to his younger brother Joe Owen in the league averages. In 1976, he helped the Newcastle Diamonds win the treble of League, Knockout Cup and Fours Championship during the 1976 National League season. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. Newcastle Diamonds were a motorcycle speedway team that raced in the SGB Championship, every Sunday night during the season (March–October) from their home at the Newcastle Stadium on the Fossway, Byker. The Stadium, previously known as Brough Park, is primarily used for greyhound racing with the speedway track built in the centre. Ian Thomas (speedway Promoter)
Ian Thomas (1942 – 16 February 2011), was a motorcycle speedway promoter and team manager, who managed the England national speedway team during 1980. Biography Thomas was born in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and left school aged 15. After failing to become a professional speedway rider he took up various jobs before finding his way into the promotion of speedway. Thomas and his business partner Jeff Brownhut founded Workington Comets after a successful application was made by for a licence to race at Derwent Park for the 1970 season. The move is credited in helping the Workington Town rugby league club avert financial troubles. The rugby pitch required moving 25 yards sideways to accommodate the speedway track. Thomas started a company called Premier Sporting Promotions and in 1971 began to bring entertainment acts such as Ken Dodd to Derwent Park. 1975 New National League Season
The 1975 National League was contested as the second division/tier of Speedway in the United Kingdom when British League Division Two was renamed. It was subsequently named the National League. Summary The league increased by one team for the fourth season in a row despite the loss of three teams; the Barrow Bombers, Long Eaton Archers and Sunderland Gladiators. The latter closed for good. Four new teams entered; the Newcastle Diamonds and Crayford Kestrels both returned for their first seasons since 1970, while Mildenhall Fen Tigers and Paisley Lions both competed in their inaugural seasons.
