Rob Short
Rob ("Shorty") Short (born August 11, 1972 in Maidstone, England) is a Canadian field hockey player. Career Short played his first international senior tournament in 1995, at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata. Highlights include the 1998 World Cup in the Netherlands where the Canadian team finished 8th, with Short scoring 4 goals in the 7 games. In 2000 he competed with the national hockey team of Canada at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, where the team finished 10th. A recent win (over Argentina in strokes) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Pan American Games meant Rob competed in his second Olympic Games in Beijing in the summer of 2008. Short has played club hockey at the highest level in the Netherlands since 1999; 3 years with HC Rotterdam, 2 years at Laren, and is currently playing his 9th year with HGC. Field Hockey
Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. 1996 Men's Hockey Olympic Qualifier
The Men's Field Hockey Olympic Qualifier for the 1996 Summer Olympics was held at the complex of Catalan sports club Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, from Friday January 19 to Sunday January 28, 1996. 2010 Men's Hockey World Cup
The 2010 Men's Hockey World Cup was the 12th edition of Men's Hockey World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's national field hockey teams organized by the International Hockey Federation. It was held from 28 February to 13 March 2010 in New Delhi, India. Australia won the tournament after defeating Germany 2–1 in the final, collecting their second World Cup, after the title obtained in 1986. The Netherlands won the third-place match by defeating England 4–3. Background India's hosting of the event was put in doubt when the FIH reviewed the progress of the Indian Hockey Federation's "Promoting Indian Hockey" program and India's preparation for the championship, and warned that "satisfactory progress had not been made in either area". 2009 Men's Pan American Cup
The 2009 Men's Pan American Cup was the third edition of the Men's Pan American Cup, the quadrennial men's international field hockey championship of the Americas organized by the Pan American Hockey Federation. It was held between 7 and 15 March 2009 in Santiago, Chile. The tournament doubled as the qualifier to the 2010 World Cup to be held in New Delhi, India. The 2006 Men's Intercontinental Cup was a qualifier for the 2006 Men's Hockey World Cup. It was held between 12 and 23 April 2006 in Changzhou, China. New Zealand won the tournament after defeating Korea 4–1 in the final. Alongside England, Pakistan and Japan, these five teams qualified for the World Cup. The 2006 Commonwealth Games, officially the XVIII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Melbourne 2006 (Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm 2006'' or ''Naarm 2006''), was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth held in Melbourne, Australia between 15 and 26 March 2006. The 2002 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XVII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Manchester 2002 were held in Manchester, England, from 25 July to 4 August, 2002.
