Road Church
A road church is a roadside church, one of a network of such churches in Denmark ( da, vejkirke), Germany (german: Autobahnkirche, open all year), Estonia ( et, Teeliste kirikud), Finland ( fi, tiekirkko, sv, vägkyrka), Norway ( no, veikirke), Russia (Murmansk oblast) and Sweden ( sv, vägkyrka). The churches are kept open for tourists during the summer holiday season. Czech Republic The only road church in the Czech Republic is the Chapel of Reconciliation ( cs, kaple SmÃÅ™enÃ), located at D5 motorway in west Bohemia near Pilsen, built in 2008. Finnish Orthodox Church
The Orthodox Church of Finland ( fi, Suomen ortodoksinen kirkko, lit=Finnish Orthodox Church; sv, Ortodoxa kyrkan i Finland, lit=Orthodox Church in Finland; ) is an autonomous Eastern Orthodox archdiocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Giovanni Michelucci, Italian architect, urban planner and designer, was born in Pistoia, Tuscany, on 2 January 1891 and died on the night of 31 December 1990, two days before his 100th birthday, at his studio-home in Fiesole, in Florence's hills, now the headquarters of his Foundation. San Giovanni Battista or dell'Autostrada del Sole is a church in Campi Bisenzio, near Florence, Italy, within a large motorway rest area shared between two autostrada roads. It can also be reached on foot from a local road outside the autostrada system. The church is formally named after John the Baptist but has also earned the name Church of the Freeway of the Sun for its location between autostrada del Sole (Freeway of the Sun) and the A11 Firenze-Mare highway. The design of the church is meant to reflect both modern and traditional church design. The "cross" floor plan and stone facing are meant to evoke a traditional feel, while the tent-like vertical elements and copper roofing reflect modern design tastes. The church stands high. Autobahnkirche Siegerland or Autobahnkirche an der A 45 is an ecumenical Christian road church at the Bundesautobahn 45 near Wilnsdorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Opened in 2013, the building has received several architecture awards. History The church is one of several German road churches which was initiated by private patrons and was financed primarily by donations. The building was erected following a design by from Frankfurt which won a 2009 competition. It was inaugurated on 26 May 2013 and received several architecture awards.
