RoAF 57th Air Base
The Romanian Air Force 57th Air Base "Mihail Kogălniceanu" ( ro, Baza 57 Aeriană "Mihail Kogălniceanu") is an air base located near Constanța, at the Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport. It is currently home to the 572nd Helicopter Squadron and also hosts the 861st Fighter Squadron of the 86th Air Base. The current base commander is '' Comandor'' Nicolae Crețu, succeeding ''Comandor'' Adrian Popescu. History Cold War era The 57th Air Base was first formed as , soon to be renamed to , on 15 April 1951 at the Pipera Aerodrome. It was equipped with Po-2, Yak-11, Yak-23 and Yak-17 aircraft. The fighter regiment moved to the Mihail Kogălniceanu Aerodrome in 1955, following the escape by seaplane of two aviators from Palazu Mare. Mihail Kogălniceanu () is a commune in Constanța County, Northern Dobruja, Romania, located northwest of Constanța proper. The commune includes three villages: * Mihail Kogălniceanu - historical names: Kara Murat ( tr, Karamurat), Bulgari ( bg, Българи) and Regele Ferdinand * Palazu Mic * Piatra (historical name: Tașaul, tr, Taşağıl) The commune further includes two territorially distinct communities, Social Group Sibioara and Social Group Ceres, which are legally part of the village of Mihail Kogălniceanu. Transit Center At Manas
Transit Center at Manas (formerly Manas Air Base and unofficially Ganci Air Base) is a former U.S. military installation at Manas International Airport, near Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It was primarily operated by the U.S. Air Force. The primary unit at the base was the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing. On 3 June 2014 American troops vacated the base and it was handed over back to the Kyrgyzstan military. The base was opened in December 2001 to support U.S. military operations in the War in Afghanistan. The base was a transit point for U.S. military personnel coming from and going to Afghanistan. Recreation facilities included internet cafes, wireless internet, pool tables, free video games, and telephone lines via the DSN that allowed coalition forces to call their homes at little or no cost. 458th Air Expeditionary Group
The 458th Air Expeditionary Group is a provisional United States Air Force unit assigned to United States Air Forces in Europe to activate or inactivate as needed. The most recent known activation of the unit was at Ramstein Air Base, Germany in 2011. The group was first activated during World War II as the 458th Bombardment Group. After training with Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bombers in the United States, it deployed to the European Theater of Operations, where it participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. Following V-E Day, the squadron returned to the United States, where it began training with Boeing B-29 Superfortresses, but was inactivated in October 1945.
