Riviera, TX
Riviera is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Kleberg County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 689. It is located south of Kingsville on U.S. Route 77 (Future Interstate 69E) and northeast of Falfurrias on Texas State Highway 285. History Riviera was founded in 1906 by Theodore Fredrick Koch, a land promoter. He purchased land from the King Ranch to sell to landseekers. He built a townsite along the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and named it after the French Riviera. Koch ran a train from Chicago to Riviera twice a month to bring more people to the area. Riviera witnessed growth in its first few years, but a drought hit the area in 1915 and then a terrible hurricane hit the area in 1916. Interstate 69E
Interstate 69E (I-69E) is a north–south freeway running through South Texas. Once complete, the freeway will begin in Brownsville and head northward before terminating near Victoria as both I-69W and I-69E merge into I-69 toward Houston. For its entire length, I-69E runs concurrently with U.S. Highway 77 (US 77). The route currently exists in two segments: a segment from its southern terminus in Brownsville to the Willacy– Kenedy county line and a shorter segment south of Corpus Christi. King Ranch
King Ranch is the largest ranch in the United States. At some it is larger than the state of Rhode Island and country of Luxembourg. It is mainly a cattle ranch, but also produced the Triple Crown winning racehorse Assault. The ranch is located in South Texas between Corpus Christi and Brownsville adjacent to Kingsville. It was founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King and Gideon K. Lewis. It includes portions of six Texas counties; most of Kleberg and much of Kenedy, with portions extending into Brooks, Jim Wells, Nueces, and Willacy counties. The ranch does not consist of one single contiguous plot of land, but rather four large sections called divisions. The divisions are the Santa Gertrudis, the Laureles, the Encino and the Norias. Texas State Highway 285
State Highway 285 (SH 285) is a state highway that runs from Riviera in southern Texas, near Corpus Christi, west to Hebbronville. Route description Beginning at a junction with US 77 (Future I-69E) at Riviera in Kleberg County, SH 285 runs southwest and west to a junction with US 281 (Future I-69C) at Falfurrias in Brooks County. In Riviera the highway is known as Olive Avenue; in Falfurrias it is known as Rice Street. SH 285 continues northwest and west to a junction with SH 339 and then to its final junction with SH 16 at Hebbronville in Jim Hogg County, where the route is known as Fal Street. SH 285 was designated on March 31, 1939, from Falfurrias to Hebbronville. On September 26, 1939 as part of a general redescription of the state highway system, SH 285 was extended east to its current end, replacing a part of SH 16. Falfurrias, Texas
Falfurrias ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Brooks County, Texas. Its population was 4,981 at the 2010 census, in a county that in the same census was just over 7,000. The town is named for founder Edward Cunningham Lasater's ranch, La Mota de Falfurrias. In 1893, the Falfurrias ranch was one of the largest in Texas at some . The biggest industry in Falfurrias is the United States Border Patrol interior checkpoint south of the city. As an indirect consequence, many migrants seeking to bypass the checkpoint by setting off across the arid land die of exposure and dehydration. The biggest issue in Falfurrias in the early 21st century is illegal immigration and the costs this imposes on Brooks County.
