Riverview Park Plat Historic District
The Riverview Park Plat Historic District is located in the north-central section of Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996. History In 1886, the Riverview Park Company bought two tracts of land from Wesley and Anne Redhead, who had owned the property for a number of years as an investment. The purchase price was $12,500. with There was a great deal of real estate development in Des Moines at this time. However, their expectations were greater than the market. While the lots were expensive, the eight lots on the north side with their panoramic vistas of the Des Moines River sold quickly. The lots south of Arlington Avenue sold more slowly. In 1891, lot 13 was further divided into three lots and was named Jackson's Subdivision. Two years later lots 9 and 10 were subdivided into 13 lots and renamed Arlington Place. American Craftsman is an American domestic architectural style, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which included interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts, beginning in the last years of the 19th century. Its immediate ancestors in American architecture are the Shingle style architecture, Shingle style, which began the move away from Victorian ornamentation toward simpler forms; and the Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright. Liebbe, Nourse & Rasmussen was an architectural firm in the U.S. state of Iowa. They designed Kromer Flats built in 1905. It designed courthouses, commercial buildings, and residences. Several are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The firm was established in 1899 as a partnership between Henry Frantz Liebbe (1851 -1927), Clinton C. Nourse, and Edward F. Rasmussen (1867 - 1930). Liebbe was born in Germany. He was in Des Moines by 1873. He married Medora Jones in 1879. He served as state architect from 1904 until his death. The American Foursquare or American Four Square is an American house style popular from the mid-1890s to the late 1930s. A reaction to the ornate and mass-produced elements of the Victorian and other Revival styles popular throughout the last half of the 19th century, the American Foursquare was plain, often incorporating handcrafted "honest" woodwork (unless purchased from a mail-order catalog). This style incorporates elements of the Prairie School and the Craftsman styles. It is also sometimes called Transitional Period. Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
