Riverside Park (La Crosse)
Riverside Park is a public park located on the riverfront of downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. It hosts events such as Riverfest, Fourth of July fireworks, Oktoberfest, Moon Tunes, and the Rotary Lights. The steamboats American Queen, La Crosse Queen, and Julia Belle Swain make stops along the river in the park. The park has walking/running trails. History The region's weather service has maintained a gauge for reading the water of the Mississippi river at Riverside Park for over 145 years. Its first iteration was installed near a flour mill on the former Mount Vernon Street. The U.S. Army Signal Corps recorded their first reading at this location on June 17, 1873. At the time, it was necessary for workers from the US Weather Bureau to visit and read the staff gauge daily. Mississippi River
The Mississippi River is the second-longest river and chief river of the second-largest drainage system in North America, second only to the Hudson Bay drainage system. WKBT-DT (channel 8) is a television station licensed to La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States, serving the La Crosse– Eau Claire market as an affiliate of CBS and MyNetworkTV. Owned by Morgan Murphy Media, the station maintains studios on South 6th Street in downtown La Crosse, and its transmitter is located on Silver Creek Road in Galesville, Wisconsin. History WKBT signed-on August 8, 1954, as a sister station to WKBH radio (AM 1410, now WIZM). In the call sign, the "T" for "television" replaced the "H" to differentiate the stations. It originally carried programming from all four major networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, and DuMont) but has always been a primary CBS affiliate. La Crosse Center
The La Crosse Center is a multi-purpose arena in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin, built in 1980. The arena can seat between 5,000 and 7,500, depending on the type of event. The center is also a convention center. In addition to the arena, which offers of exhibit space, two locker rooms, and three dressing rooms, there is North Hall, which can open up to the arena to be used in combination; and a South Exhibit Hall. All three venues total of exhibit space. The complex also contains of space in five meeting rooms, which can be divided into nine meeting rooms. While both exhibit halls and the arena are used for trade shows, conventions, meetings and banquets, the arena is also used for sporting events, concerts, circuses, ice shows, and other events. The Freight House is a restaurant in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin located close to the river front and Riverside Park. The building was a freight house built by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1880, with an addition in 1904. It was converted in 1978 into a restaurant. Copeland Park (La Crosse)
Copeland Park, also referred to as "The Lumber Yard", is a stadium in La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA. It is primarily used for baseball and is the home field of the La Crosse Loggers baseball team. The current stadium was built in 2003, although a substantially smaller baseball diamond existed at the site before the construction of the new ballpark. At the time of its construction, the stadium held approximately 2,000 people. However, the success of the Loggers prompted expansions to the grandstand, bringing the capacity to its current 3,550 people. Pettibone Park (La Crosse)
Pettibone Park is a public park on Barron Island in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The park is located across the Mississippi River from the city's downtown riverfront. Its facilities include walking trails, fishing docks, a beach, and a disc golf course. The park is named after Albert Wells Pettibone (1827–1915), a former mayor of the city of La Crosse who privately funded the creation of the park. Pettibone died before the park could formally be gifted to the city as he intended, because of a border dispute between the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota which was not fully resolved until 1919. Statue Of Hiawatha
The Statue of Hiawatha was a monument located at Riverside Park in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The statue was created by Anthony Zimmerhakl and overlooked the convergence of three rivers at Riverside Park: the Mississippi River, Black River, and the La Crosse River. It had been built with the intention of drawing tourism to the area and was based on a fictionalized version of Hiawatha, a 16th-century Native American chief who had no connection to local tribes. Long standing public debate about whether the statue was offensive or presented a caricature based on stereotypes of Native Americans eventually led to its removal in 2020, nearly 60 years after it was erected. Elmer Petersen
Elmer Paul Petersen (September 4, 1928 – August 5, 2020) was an American sculptor who worked in metal. His most prominent artwork is the World's Largest Buffalo in Jamestown, North Dakota. Petersen lived and worked in Galesville, Wisconsin. Much of his art is publicly displayed around La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he led the Downtown La Crosse Sculpture Project Committee. The La Crosse Tribune called Petersen "one of the premier sculptors in the Coulee Region" and "instrumental in getting public sculpture scattered throughout downtown" La Crosse. He has worked significantly with welding, including that of found metal objects, and often sculpted in cast bronze. While at Dana College, Petersen was drafted in the middle of his education, then returned on the GI Bill to do graduate work in art at the University of Wisconsin.
