Riverside Cemetery (Oshkosh, Wisconsin)
Riverside Cemetery is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2003. Founding and expansion of cemetery On March 6, 1855, the city of Oshkosh purchased a land parcel from Maria Grignon for creation of a cemetery. The parcel was located on the east bank of the Fox River and was named Riverside Cemetery. It was built as a replacement for the Locust Grove Cemetery, which was the first burial ground in Oshkosh and built in 1848. Between 1855 and 1869, the remains of those buried in Locust Grove were moved to Riverside Cemetery. In 1855, the Riverside Catholic cemetery was laid out north of the cemetery and expanded further in 1875. In 1868, a parcel was purchased east of the Riverside Cemetery by Masons. Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). Although the fur trade attracted the first European settlers to the area as early as 1818, it never became a major player in the fur trade. The 1820s mining boom in southwest Wisconsin along with the opening of the Erie Canal shifted commercial activity away from the Fox River Valley and Green Bay. Soon after 1830, much of the trade moved west, as there had been over-trapping in the region. Florian Lampert (July 8, 1863 – July 18, 1930), was a Republican Party (United States), Republican member of the United States House of Representatives serving Wisconsin's 6th congressional district, Wisconsin's 6th District. Career Florian Lampert was born on July 8, 1863 in West Bend, Wisconsin, he moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin with his widowed mother in 1875. There he engaged in the retail shoe business (1880–1893), served as city comptroller (1893–1896), sheriff of Winnebago County (1897–1898), and city commissioner of Oshkosh (1914–1918). George Fitch (November 3, 1848 – March 30, 1896) was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. Biography Fitch was born on November 3, 1848, in Glens Falls, New York. Edward Eastman
Edward Eastman (February 22, 1806February 23, 1870) was an American merchant, politician, and pioneer settler of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was active in civic and territorial affairs, and known as a Democrat and Free Soiler. In 1847 he was one of a partnership approved by the territorial legislature to build the first bridge across the Fox River in Oshkosh. After the city was incorporated in 1853, Eastman was elected as the first mayor of Oshkosh. He also served several years before and after that by appointment as its postmaster. In 1850 he was elected and served a single one-year term in the Wisconsin State Assembly as a Free Soil Party member. After his political career, he became a bookseller in Oshkosh.
