Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board
The Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) is a government of Rivers State body entrusted with the responsibility of providing free, mandatory and universal basic education to school-age children in the state. It is headquartered at 16A Elechi Beach Road in Port Harcourt. The Board was established by the UBE Law (2005), with its operations overseen by the Rivers State Ministry of Education. Some of its primary functions include advising the government on the development of basic education, management of affairs of teaching and non-teaching staff, upholding of children rights to education. Board members including the Chairman are appointed by the Governor. As of January 2015, the chairman of the board is Sir Alli. The Government of Rivers State consists of elected representatives and appointed officials responsible for the government of Rivers State, Nigeria. Rivers State has a population of about 5 million people, and is one of the 36 states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The state government is composed of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches, whose powers are vested by the Constitution in the House of Assembly, the Governor and the High Court. The judiciary operates independently of the executive and the legislature. At the local level, elected officials are in charge of local government areas. National Network (newspaper)
The ''National Network'' is an English language Nigerian weekly newspaper founded 25 November 2004. It is published by Network Printing and Publishing Company and has its headquarters in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Topics the newspaper covers include local and national main news, sports, business, political events and personalities. In January 2005, Jerry Needam, owner of the paper was arrested at his office for allegedly fabricating a news report aimed at tarnishing Rivers State Police commissioner Sylvester Araba's image and reputation. In 2011, ''National Network'' celebrated the "seventh" anniversary of its foundation. The ceremony which took place at the Silverbird Hall, Port Harcourt, was the most attended of its kind in the state's history. The Rivers State Ministry of Education is a ministry of the Government of Rivers State of Nigeria, created to encourage development of education in the state. The ministry is tasked with the formulation of policies for promoting and realizing effective educational standards, and practices similar to those of other jurisdictions. Governor Of Rivers State
The Governor of Rivers State is the chief executive of the Rivers State government and is one of the governors of the thirty-six states of Nigeria. The governor is supported by the Deputy Governor, both popularly elected for a term of four years (maximum of two terms). The governor, as head of the executive branch, has the power to appoint commissioners responsible for each of the state's ministries, the heads of parastatals, judicial officers and the state-owned bodies with specific regulatory or administrative duties. The Tide (Nigeria)
''The Tide'' is a Nigerian daily newspaper. It is the most widely circulated newspaper published in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and one of Nigeria's major newspapers. Owned and funded by the state, ''The Tide'' began printing operations on 1 December 1971 and has a digital version. Fire On 20 July 2012, a fire broke out in ''The Tide''s main building, damaging significant portions of the establishment, including the General Manager's office, Credit Control Unit, Administration General office and Board Room. Although no injuries or deaths were reported, much of the company's equipment and staff documents were destroyed. According to a statement from the General Manager Mr. Celestine Ogolo, the fire started at around 2.00a.m and quickly took over the highest floor of the building where his office was stationed.
