Neighborhoods In The Bronx
This article features a list of neighborhoods in the Bronx, one of the five New York City Borough, boroughs of New York City. When using this article, note that names of many (but not all) neighborhoods in the Bronx are popular based on their historical pedigree and the livability factor. However, this is not true for all neighborhoods in the Bronx; while someone living at East 213th Street & White Plains Road might prefer to describe their location simply as "Gun Hill Road" (a nearby thoroughfare) rather than "Williamsbridge". Other neighborhood names have greater popularity. For example, Riverdale was once home to John F. Kennedy and is known for its affluence, large mansions, and proximity to amenities. Throggs Neck has a bridge named for it and the neighborhood is known for waterfront beach communities located on the Long Island Sound. Regions of the Bronx Generally speaking, there are two major systems of dividing the Bronx into regions, which often conflict with one another ...

Anthony Van Corlaer
Anthony Van Corlaer is a fictional trumpeter of New Amsterdam, appearing in Washington Irving's 1809 ''A History of New York'' and subsequent lore, most famously for supposedly heroically drowning in (and giving its name to) Spuyten Duyvil Creek in 1664. He is portrayed as a loyal follower to the real historical Peter Stuyvesant, with a contrasting boisterous temperament to the stern colonial governor. The character and incident were sometimes later described as fact or "legend", but Washington seems to have only drawn from an account by David Pietersz. de Vries of an unnamed boisterous and pugilistic trumpeter in the colony. Factual basis Although the Spuyten Duyvil Creek episode is sometimes repeated as fact or "legend", the character of Anthony Van Corlaer is a fictional one, and there is no historical record of such an occurrence preceding the novel's publication. The factual basis of the character was an account by David Pietersz. de Vries of an unnamed boisterous and pugi ...

Hudson River
The Hudson River is a river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York. It originates in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York and flows southward through the Hudson Valley to the New York Harbor between New York City and Jersey City, eventually draining into the Atlantic Ocean at Lower New York Bay. The river serves as a political boundary between the states of New Jersey and New York at its southern end. Farther north, it marks local boundaries between several New York counties. The lower half of the river is a tidal estuary, deeper than the body of water into which it flows, occupying the Hudson Fjord, an inlet which formed during the most recent period of North American glaciation, estimated at 26,000 to 13,300 years ago. Even as far north as the city of Troy, the flow of the river changes direction with the tides. The Hudson River runs through the Munsee, Lenape, Mohican, Mohawk, and Haudenosaunee homelands. Prior to European ...

"Spuyten Duyvil neighborhood" in although some consider it to be the southernmost part of Riverdale. Etymology The area is named after Spuyten Duyvil Creek. It may also be translated as "Spewing Devil" or "Spinning Devil", or more loosely as "Devil's Whirlpool" or "Devil's Spate." ''Spui'' is a Dutch word involving outlets for water. Historian Reginald Pelham Bolton, however, argues that the phrase means "spouting meadow", referring to a fresh-water spring at Inwood Hill. An additional translation, "to spite the Devil" or "in spite of the devil", was popularized by a story in Washington ...

The Harlem River is an tidal strait in New York, United States, flowing between the Hudson River and the East River and separating the island of Manhattan from the Bronx on the New York mainland.
