Meander
A meander is one of a series of regular sinuous curves in the channel of a river or other watercourse. It is produced as a watercourse erodes the sediments of an outer, concave bank ( cut bank) and deposits sediments on an inner, convex bank which is typically a point bar. The result of this coupled erosion and sedimentation is the formation of a sinuous course as the channel migrates back and forth across the axis of a floodplain. The zone within which a meandering stream periodically shifts its channel is known as a meander belt. It typically ranges from 15 to 18 times the width of the channel. Neukieritzsch is a municipality in the Leipzig (district), Leipzig district, in Saxony, Germany. On 1 April 2008, the former municipality of Lobstädt was incorporated into Neukieritzsch. Bad Lausick
Bad Lausick () is a town in the Leipzig (district), Leipzig district, in Saxony, Germany. It is situated 12 km southwest of Grimma, and 29 km southeast of Leipzig. History Middle Ages to 18th century In 1096 Bad Lausick was mentioned for the first time as ''Luzke''. In later documents the names ''Luzic'' (1181), ''Luzich'' (1219) and ''Lußigk'' (1414) were used. In 1497 the place was described as ''Laussigk'' for the first time. In 1106 the construction of the St.-Kilian-Kirche (Bad Lausick), St. Kilian church was begun under the supervision of Pegau monastery, which like the church had been founded by Wiprecht von Groitzsch. It is known as the oldest preserved church in Saxony. In 1158 ''Luzeche'' was mentioned as a fortified place with market rights. Following the Treaty of Leipzig, ''Laussigk'' became part of the Duchy of Saxe-Wittenberg. A school started work in 1529. The Pleiße is a river of Saxony and Thuringia, Germany. The Pleiße has its source southwest of Zwickau at Ebersbrunn, then flows through Werdau, Crimmitschau, Altenburg, and other towns and villages in Saxony and Thuringia, before flowing from the right into the White Elster in Leipzig. The river originally had a natural length of ; however, south of Leipzig, it has been straightened, which shortened it to around . Kolk (vortex)
A kolk (colc) is an underwater vortex created when rapidly rushing water passes an underwater obstacle in boundary areas of high shear. High-velocity gradients produce a violently rotating column of water, similar to a tornado. Kolks can pluck multiple-ton blocks of rock and transport them in suspension for thousands of metres. Kolks leave clear evidence in the form of plucked-bedrock pits, called rock-cut basins or kolk lakes and downstream deposits of gravel-supported blocks that show percussion but no rounding. Examples Kolks were first identified by the Dutch, who observed kolks hoisting several-ton blocks of riprap from dikes and transporting them away, suspended above the bottom. In oceanography, geomorphology, and geoscience, a shoal is a natural submerged ridge, bank, or bar that consists of, or is covered by, sand or other unconsolidated material and rises from the bed of a body of water to near the surface.
