The River Clarin ( ga, Abhainn an Chláirín) is a fast-flowing river in Ireland, flowing through southern County Galway. Course The River Clarin rises in the townland of Gortnalone, north of Attymon and snakes westwards, turning southwards through Athenry. Athenry Castle was built at a fording point on the river. It flows southwestwards and passes under the N18 at Clarinbridge and enters Dunbulcaun Bay. Wildlife Fish species include Crayfish, trout, salmon, lamprey and eel. Athenry
Athenry (; ) is a town in County Galway, Ireland, which lies east of Galway city. Some of the attractions of the medieval town are its town wall, Athenry Castle, its priory and its 13th century street-plan. The town is also well known by virtue of the song "The Fields of Athenry". History Athenry's name derives from the ford ('Áth') crossing the river Clarin just east of the settlement. Though other inaccurate explanations are still given, it was called 'Áth na Ríogh' ('Ford of the Kings') because it was the home area of the Cenél nDéigill, kings of the Soghain, whose leading lineage were the Ó Mainnín. On some medieval maps of English origin the town is called Kingstown. Originally, Soghain was surrounded by Uí Maine to the east, Aidhne to the south, and Maigh Seola to the west. Galway Bay
Galway Bay (Irish: ''Loch Lurgain'' or ''Cuan na Gaillimhe'') is a bay on the west coast of Ireland, between County Galway in the province of Connacht to the north and the Burren in County Clare in the province of Munster to the south; Galway city is on the northeast side. The bay is about long and from to in breadth. The Aran Islands (''Oileáin Árann'') are to the west across the entrance and there are numerous small islands within the bay. Attymon
Attymon railway station ( ga, Stáisiún Áth Tíomáin) serves the townland of Attymon in County Galway, Ireland. The station is on the Dublin to Galway Rail service. Passengers to or from Westport railway station travel to Athlone and change trains. Passengers to or from Limerick and Ennis travel to Athenry and change trains. Description It is the smallest station on the Dublin-Galway line consisting of a single platform with no waiting room, just two shelters on the platform. The building at the station is boarded up and used as a store for the line maintenance crew. There is a small free-of-charge car park at the station and a ticket machine is located at the entrance to the platform. Local requests for better service Residents of Attymon and the surrounding areas have made numerous requests to Iarnród Éireann to stop further trains in Attymon. Athenry Castle
Athenry Castle is a tower house and National Monument located in Athenry, Ireland. Location Athenry Castle is located off Court Lane in the east part of Athenry, on the west bank of the River Clarin. It is sited on a natural rise and defended the ford. History Despite being locally known as King John's Castle or King John's Court (after the Lord of Ireland 1177–1216), it wasn't built until twenty years after his reign. The original keep (constructed 1235/40) was low and squat, the roof being at the level of the present second floor. Meyler de Bermingham extended it c. 1250. In 1316 the castle was attacked, leading to the construction of city walls. In the 15th century the Berminghams moved from it to their town house near the market cross in the square. In 1596 (during the Nine Years' War) the castle fell into the hands of the O'Donnells. N18 Road (Ireland)
The N18 road is a national primary road in Ireland, connecting the cities of Limerick and Galway. Ennis and Gort are two major towns on the route, and Shannon Airport is reached via the connecting N19. The west coast route continues on to Sligo as the N17. The section from Limerick to the N19 junction forms part of European route E20, and the entire route is part of the proposed Atlantic Corridor. The section of motorway from Shannon to Claregalway is designated the M18 motorway. The tolled Limerick Tunnel forms part of the route. The brown trout (''Salmo trutta'') is a European species of salmonid fish that has been widely introduced into suitable environments globally. It includes purely freshwater populations, referred to as the riverine ecotype, ''Salmo trutta'' morpha ''fario'', a lacustrine ecotype, ''S. trutta'' morpha ''lacustris'', also called the lake trout, and anadromous forms known as the sea trout, ''S. trutta'' morpha ''trutta''. Atlantic Salmon
The Atlantic salmon (''Salmo salar'') is a species of ray-finned fish in the family Salmonidae. It is the third largest of the Salmonidae, behind Siberian taimen and Pacific Chinook salmon, growing up to a meter in length. Atlantic salmon are found in the northern Atlantic Ocean and in rivers that flow into it. Most populations are anadromous, hatching in streams and rivers but moving out to sea as they grow where they mature, after which the adults seasonally move upstream again to spawn. When the mature fish re-enter rivers to spawn, they change in colour and appearance. Some populations of this fish only migrate to large lakes, and are "landlocked", spending their entire lives in freshwater. Such populations are found throughout the range of the species.
