River Annalee
The River Annalee () is a river in County Cavan, Ireland. The source of the river is Lough Sillan near Shercock from which it flows westwards through Lough Tacker, and south of Cootehill, until it reaches Butlersbridge. To the west of the village the river then flows through a series of lakes, before its confluence with the River Erne. The Bunnoe and Laragh Rivers are two main tributaries that join the river below Cootehill, where it is also joined by the Dromore River. The Irish name for the river is ''Abhainn na hEoghanach'', which originates from the name of the historical district to the north of the river known as ''An Eoghanach'', a district sometimes anglicised as Owenagh. The anglicised name of the river derives from one of the townlands through which it flows, namely Annaghlee (''Eanach Lao''). Butlersbridge
Butlersbridge (), also Butler's Bridge, is a village in County Cavan in Ireland, north of Cavan town just off the N3 national primary road. It was previously a through-point on the N3, but was bypassed in 1999. The bridge in the village crosses the River Annalee, a tributary of the River Erne. Butlersbridge Church is dedicated to the local St. Aiden. It is about via the N54 to the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. History The history of the Butlersbridge dates back around 6000 years to the Neolithic when farming arrived. The area fell within the domains of the O’Reilly clan until the Plantation of Ulster started in the early 17th Century which resulted in the O'Reillys having their lands confiscated. Lough Sillan
Lough Sillan () is a lough (lake) located near the town of Shercock in County Cavan, Ireland. History On 25 July 1878, schoolmaster Michael McCabe took his pupils on a boat trip on Lough Sillan. After travelling a short distance the vessel capsized and sank, claiming 17 victims: the school principal, his wife, two school staff, and 13 pupils. It was one of Ireland's worst inland drowning tragedies. In July 2004, a plaque was unveiled at the lake shore adjacent to the path used by those who died. Facilities There is a mobile home park and public playground on the lake shore, with a lodge, tennis court, and marina nearby. The lake is used for fishing and water sports. River Erne
The River Erne ( , ga, Abhainn na hÉirne or ''An Éirne'') in the northwest of the island of Ireland, is the second-longest river in Ulster, flowing through Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and forming part of their border. Shercock
Shercock ( ); ) is a small town situated in the east of County Cavan, Ireland. As of the 2016 census, the population of the town was 588. Shercock is located at the intersection of the R162 and R178 regional roads. It sits on the shores of three lakes: Lough Sillan, Steepleton's Lake, and Muddy Lake. Lough Sillan is the largest of the three, covering approximately 162 hectares. History The town was founded in the early seventeenth century as a plantation village to accommodate mainly Presbyterian Scottish settlers who were planted in this part of County Cavan. Usually, these planters gave their new settlements English or Scottish names—the neighbouring towns are Kingscourt, Cootehill, and Bailieborough—but Shercock retained its Irish name. Cootehill
Cootehill (; ) is a market town and townland in County Cavan, Ireland. Cootehill was formerly part of the neighbouring townland of Munnilly. Both townlands lie within the barony of Tullygarvey. The English language name of the town is a portmanteau of "Coote" and "Hill", the family names of a local 18th century landowning family. Name The town's Irish name, ''Muinchille'', derives from the Irish language term meaning a ridge or "sleeve". The town's name in English, Cootehill, is a portmanteau attributed to the intermarriage of the landowning Coote and Hill families in the early 1700s. Bunnoe
Bunnoe () a townland in the Parish of Drung, part of the Barony of Tullygarvey and in the Diocese of Kilmore in the County Cavan. It also gives its name to the area in the northern part of the Roman Catholic part of the Parish of Drung. Charles Joseph Fay
Charles Joseph Fay, MP, JP (''ca.'' 1842 – 1895), was an Irish politician. Initially a Liberal, he was the Home Rule League MP for Cavan, elected for 1874 and 1880 holding his seat until the constituency was abolished in 1885. In January, 1878 he was elected to the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland. In March 1878 he was appointed to the Select Committee on the Irish Land Act 1870. In contrast to many fellow Home rulers, his opposition to the Irish Coercion Acts was reported as lacklustre. He was the youngest of the four sons of Thomas Fay (b 1791) of Faybrook, Cootehill, County Cavan. His brother James-Henry Fay, J.P., was High Sheriff of Cavan from 23 Feb 1881 until 25 Jan 1882. In later life Fay had a residence at Granite Lodge, Kingstown. In September 1895, he went missing, having been last seen alive at Cootehill Fair.
