Ritva Koistinen
Ritva Koistinen (born 1956) is a kantele artist and the founder of soloist kantele education at Sibelius Academy (Classical music department). She has been teaching there since 1987, as the Lecturer of Kantele Music from 1995, and during this time she has educated the young generation of Kantele musicians in Finland. Koistinen started performing already in her childhood, and since the 1980s she has been giving concerts as a soloist both in Finland and abroad, e.g. in the USA, UK, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, Canada, and Russia. She has co-operated with several composers and given the first performances of numerous contemporary pieces, among them several chamber music works as well as Kantele Concertos by Pekka Jalkanen and Pehr Henrik Nordgren which she performed with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonia Lahti. Kantele
A kantele () or kannel () is a traditional Finnish and Karelian plucked string instrument (chordophone) belonging to the south east Baltic box zither family known as the Baltic psaltery along with Estonian kannel, Latvian kokles, Lithuanian kanklės and Russian gusli. Construction Small kantele Modern instruments with 15 or fewer strings are generally more closely modeled on traditional shapes, and form a category of instrument known as small kantele, in contrast to the modern concert kantele. The oldest forms of kantele have five or six horsehair strings and a wooden body carved from one piece; more modern instruments have metal strings and often a body made from several pieces. The traditional kantele has neither bridge nor nut, the strings run directly from the tuning pegs to a metal bar (''varras'') set into wooden brackets (''ponsi''). Sibelius Academy
The Sibelius Academy ( fi, Taideyliopiston Sibelius-Akatemia, sv, Sibelius-Akademin vid Konstuniversitetet) is part of the University of the Arts Helsinki and a university-level music school which operates in Helsinki and Kuopio, Finland. Kronos Quartet
The Kronos Quartet is an American string quartet based in San Francisco. It has been in existence with a rotating membership of musicians for almost 50 years. The quartet covers a very broad range of musical genres, including contemporary classical music. More than 900 works have been commission (art), written for it. History The quartet was founded by violinist David Harrington in Seattle, Washington (state), Washington. Its first performance was in November 1973. Since 1978, the quartet has been based in San Francisco, California. The longest-running combination of performers (from 1978 to 1999) had Harrington and John Sherba on violin, Hank Dutt on viola, and Joan Jeanrenaud on cello. Carnegie Hall ( ) is a concert venue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Ulla Katajavuori
Ulla Kyllikki Katajavuori-Koskimies (16 June 1909 in Rauma — 5 October 2001 in Helsinki) was a Finnish musician who played the traditional Finnish kantele, performing from the 1930s to the 1990s. One of her recordings is the Karelian folk song '' Konevitsan kirkonkellot''.
