Rising, Norway
Rising is an old estate, area and geographical entity ( no, matrikkelgård) in Gjerpen, Norway, known for its association with Henrik Ibsen. It is located just outside of the city of Skien, and became part of Skien municipality in 1964. History Rising was probably cleared in the early Iron Age (500 BC–550 AD) and there are finds from the Stone Age and Viking Age there. Already in the Viking Age the estate was divided into a southern and a northern farm. Rising borders on Grini and Venstøp in the north, on Gjerpen parsonage and Grini in the east, on Vattenberg and Skien city in the south, and on Mæla in the west. Rising is located near Gjerpen Church. The Rising farms were owned by the church in the Middle Ages and later became part of the Gjerpen provost's estate. They were sold to Cort Adeler in 1668. Knud Ibsen
Knud Plesner Ibsen (3 October 1797, in Skien – 24 October 1877, in Skien) was a Norwegian merchant from the city of Skien and the father of the playwright Henrik Ibsen. He is widely considered the model for many central characters in his son's plays, including Jon Gynt in ''Peer Gynt'' and Old Ekdahl in ''The Wild Duck''. Early life Knud Ibsen was the son of ship's captain Henrich Johan Ibsen and Johanne Plesner; his paternal great-grandfather had immigrated from Denmark to Norway in 1726. His father died at sea outside Hesnesøya near Grimstad in November 1797, and the following year, Johanne married ship's captain Ole Paus; in 1799 Ole Paus bought the estate Rising near Skien after selling the Ibsen house in downtown Skien, and the family moved to Rising in 1800. Frantz Oskar Mosfjeld (20 January 1896 – 21 April 1977) was a Norwegian literary scholar known for his widely cited (in the field) ''opus magnum'' on Henrik Ibsen's biography, ''Henrik Ibsen og Skien: En biografisk og litteratur-psykologisk studie'', published by Gyldendal Norsk Forlag in 1949, and for which he was awarded the philosophical doctorate in 1950. ''An Enemy of the People'' (original Norwegian title: ''En folkefiende''), an 1882 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, followed his previous play, ''Ghosts'', which criticized the hypocrisy of his society's moral code. That response included accusations of both ''Ghosts'' and its author being "scandalous," "degenerate," and "immoral." ''Peer Gynt'' (, ) is a five- act play in verse by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen published in 1876. Written in Norwegian, it is one of the most widely performed Norwegian plays. Altenburggården
Altenburggården (Altenburg House) was a large town house in central Skien, Norway, known as the childhood home of the playwright Henrik Ibsen and his mother Marichen Altenburg. It burned down during the great fire of 1886. It was located at the address Skistredet 20. Ole Paus (shipowner)
Ole Paus (23 March 1766 – 26 July 1855) was a Norwegian ship's captain, shipowner and land owner, who belonged to the patriciate of the port town of Skien from the late 18th century. He is noted as the stepfather of Knud Ibsen (1797–1877) as well as being the uncle of Marichen Altenburg (1799–1869) the parents of noted playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906). Biography Ole Paus was born at Bjåland in Lårdal, Telemark, Norway. In his youth, he had moved to Skien in Vestfold og Telemark where he was raised by relatives before went to sea as a 12-year-old and became a skipper. He was married to Johanne Plesner 1770–1847) who had previously been married to ship's captain Henrich Ibsen (1765–1797). Cort Adeler
Cort Sivertsen Adeler (16 December 16225 November 1675), known in Denmark as Coort Sifvertsen Adelaer, in the Netherlands as Koert Sievertsen Adelaer and in Italy as Curzio Suffrido Adelborst, was the name of honour given to Kurt Sivertsen, a Norwegian seaman, who rendered distinguished service to the Danish and Dutch navies, and also to the Republic of Venice against the Turks. Early naval career Cort Sivertsen was born in Brevik, Norway, the son of a shipper. At the age of fifteen he took service with the Dutch navy; in 1639 he fought under Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Tromp at the Battle of the Downs. Gjerpen
Gjerpen is a former township which is now part of the municipality of Skien, in Telemark county, Norway. Location The parish of Gjerpen was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 4,381. Gjerpen was located east of the city of Skien. It encompassed districts such as Borgestad, Bøle, Gulset and Luksefjell. On 1 July 1916 an area with roughly 1,332 inhabitants was moved to Skien, and on 1 July 1920 an area with 437 inhabitants was moved to Porsgrunn. On 1 January 1964 the rest of Gjerpen was incorporated into Skien, along with Solum and the district Valebø. Prior to the merger Gjerpen had a population of 15,300. The current district of Gjerpen constitute only a small part of the former Gjerpen municipality. Gjerpen Church
Gjerpen Church ( no, Gjerpen kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Skien Municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the town of Skien. It is one of the churches for the Gjerpen parish which is part of the Skien prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The tan, stone church was built in a cruciform design around the year 1153 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 485 people. The church is still used for regular worship services as well as weddings, baptisms, and other religious events. It has seating for about 450 and room for 600 people. It is one of the few remaining building in Norway dating from the middle ages that are still in use. The church has a more modern chapel that is used in combination for ceremonies.
