Rio De Janeiro Petrochemical Complex
The Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex, (; abbreviated as COMPERJ), is a petrochemical facility in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil built by Petrobras on a 45 km2 piece of land making it the largest single enterprise by Petrobras and one of the largest industrial facilities in the world. It was heavily involved in Operation Car Wash, a large and widespread criminal investigation by Brazilian police, to which its license of operation was revoked leading to high numbers of unemployment and debt. Operation The facility contains a refining unit with a processing capacity of 165,000 barrels of oil per day. Initially, it was planned to use heavy oil from the Marlim oil field located in Campos Basin, a few kilometers north of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to the refining unit, a first-generation basic petrochemicals unit (ethylene, benzene, p-xylene and propylene) and six second-generation petrochemicals units were planned to be built. Campos Basin Oil Spill
On November 7, 2011, a Chevron owned oil well began leaking causing of crude oil to enter the ocean every day. The leak took place in Campos Basin, Brazil off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. At first, Chevron claimed that the leak was most likely due to a seep in the ocean floor but later admitted that they had made a miscalculation. Chevron says that they underestimated the amount pressure that the reservoir would exert on the oil well and says that heavier mud should have been used to seal the well. of oil were spilled over the course of four days until the well was finally sealed. After the oil spill, 18 ships were sent out into the ocean to clean the spill. There was little documented environmental impact, and the oil never reached the shores of Rio. The Arco Metropolitano do Rio de Janeiro (Also known simply as Arco Metropolitano) is a highway designed to connect the five main highways that cross the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The project was divided in two stages. The first stretch of 71 km will link highways Washington Luís and Rio-Santos. It is budgeted at US$800 million and will initially be implemented in cooperation between the State Government of Rio de Janeiro and the DNIT. When the project is completed the arch should reach a total of 145 km.
