Ringvaart Regatta
The OC&C Ringvaart Regatta is a rowing race over the very long distance of . The D.S.R.V. Laga (a student rowing club in Delft) has organised the head race annually since 1976. History In 1976 the Laga club members celebrated their centennial. As part of their anniversary they challenged De KSRV 'Njord' (The Royal Student Rowing club 'Njord') for this 100 km marathon. Soon other student rowing clubs heard about the race and the Ringvaart Regatta became an annual event. Trail The rowing race starts at the Kagerplassen and rounds the Ringvaart counterclockwise once before returning to the Kagerplassen. The rowers then enter the Vliet canal. Rowing (sport)
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. A head race is a time-trial competition in the sport of rowing. Head races are typically held in the fall, winter and spring seasons. These events draw many athletes as well as observers. In this form of racing, rowers race against the clock where the crew or rower completing the course in the shortest time in their age, ability and boat-class category is deemed the winner. Categories Common categories of age may be high school and college-aged rowers as well as adults. Those over the age of 27 are typically referred to as "masters". Ringvaart
The Ringvaart (known in full as Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeer Polder) is a canal in the province of North Holland, the Netherlands. The Ringvaart (Dutch meaning "ring canal") is a true circular canal surrounding the Haarlemmermeer polder and forms the boundary of the Haarlemmermeer municipality. Ringvaart is also the name of the dike bordering the canal. Construction of the canal began in 1839 as the first step to reclaim land from Haarlemmermeer (Dutch for Haarlem's Lake). Thousands of laborers dug a canal through the existing land, as much as possible closely following the lake's contour. But at three locations (Vijfhuizen, Lisserbroek, and Huigsloot), the Ringvaart was dug through peninsulas which thereafter became part of Haarlemmermeer. Vliet (canal)
The Vliet is a canal in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It starts at the Oude Rijn at Leiden and joins the Delfshavense Schie canal at Delft. Places along its banks include Voorschoten, Leidschendam, Voorburg, The Hague and Rijswijk. The canal was dug in 47 AD under command of Roman general Corbulo, who wished to connect river Rhine, of which the current Oude Rijn stream in Roman times was the main branch, to the Meuse estuary The capital of the Cananefates (Forum Hadriani, or modern Voorburg) was established along the canal. The canal was likely improved in 121 under the reign of Hadrian and it is theorized that to maintain water levels there may have been dams and spillways. Wubbo Ockels
Wubbo Johannes Ockels (28 March 1946 – 18 May 2014) was a Dutch physicist and astronaut with the European Space Agency who, in 1985, became the first Dutch citizen in space when he flew on STS-61-A as a payload specialist. He later became professor of aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology. Education and early life Ockels was born in Almelo, Netherlands, but considered Groningen to be his hometown. He obtained his MSc degree in physics and mathematics in 1973 and subsequently a PhD degree in the same subjects in 1978 from the University of Groningen.
