Ringling Brothers Parade Film
''Ringling Brothers Parade Film'' is a 1902 short subject film produced by William Nicholas Selig. The three-minute film captures a Ringling Brothers Circus parade featuring elephants, camels, and caged lions in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. Onlookers are visible along the route as the parade moved south on Capitol Avenue, past the Indiana Statehouse, then east on Washington Street. The film was thought lost until 2011 when an Oakland, California, couple donated an unmarked canister containing the film to the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum. After the film was researched, identified, and restored, it was uploaded to YouTube in October 2020. William Nicholas Selig
William Nicholas Selig (March 14, 1864 – July 15, 1948) was a pioneer of the American motion picture industry. In 1896 he created one of the first film production companies, Selig Polyscope Company of Chicago. Selig produced a string of commercially successful films in the early years of the film industry. His '' The Tramp and the Dog'' (1896) is considered the first narrative film set in Chicago. Selig claimed to have made the first narrative film shot in Los Angeles, ''The Count of Monte Cristo'', and, in 1909, established what may have been the first permanent L.A. studio, in Edendale, Los Angeles. He also produced the first Wizard of Oz film in 1910, the first U.S. company to shoot a two-reel film, ''Damon and Pythias'' (1908), and the first true serial, ''The Adventures of Kathlyn'' (1913–1914). Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows is a circus founded in Baraboo, Wisconsin, United States in 1884 by five of the seven Ringling brothers: Albert, August, Otto, Alfred T., Charles, John, and Henry. The Ringling brothers were sons of a German immigrant, August Frederick Rüngeling, who changed his name to Ringling once he settled in America. The National Film Registry (NFR) is the United States National Film Preservation Board's (NFPB) collection of films selected for preservation, each selected for its historical, cultural and aesthetic contributions since the NFPB’s inception in 1988. Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum
The Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum is located in what is now the historic district of Niles in the city of Fremont, CA. The museum is housed in the Edison Theater, a century-old Nickelodeon movie theater, just half a block from the former site of the Niles Essanay Studios where Broncho Billy and Charlie Chaplin made films in the 1910s. It is dedicated to preserving and showing silent films and their history. The silent film historical work of one of the members of its staff, David Kiehn, was featured on '' 60 Minutes'' for demonstrating that a film shot in San Francisco titled ''A Trip Down Market Street'' was actually made a few days before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
