Riley, Oregon
Riley is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States, located at the crossroads of U.S. Highway 395 and U.S. Highway 20, milepost 104, about west of Burns, the seat of Harney County. The elevation of Riley is . The town presently consists entirely of two service establishments with attached apartments: a post office, and a general store with gas pump and garage service. It exists to serve the rural farming and ranching community that surrounds it, and highway travelers. Farmers grow alfalfa, hay, and root crops. The town began with the establishment of a post office in about 1885, and was named for stockman Amos Riley of the ranching partnership Riley and Hardin. Previously, the nearest post office was at Hardin, northwest of Riley, so the people who lived along Silver Creek made Riley their new gathering spot. Silver Creek (Harney County, Oregon)
Silver Creek is an stream of Oregon which drains a portion of the endorheic Harney Basin to Harney Lake. Arising in the Blue Mountains, it flows generally southeast, although much of the stream is intermittent. The Silver Creek Volcanic Field is associated with the creek's watershed. Course From its headwaters in the southern Blue Mountains, Silver Creek flows south through the Ochoco National Forest and is fed by tributaries and, at the base of the mountains, large springs feed the creek. The creek meanders through a broad alluvial plain and turns southeast near Chickahominy Reservoir, traveling through the unincorporated community of Riley, where it is crossed by Highway 20 and Highway 395, respectively. Public Oregon Intercity Transit
The POINT Intercity Bus Service is a four-route, intercity bus service of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The service is administered by ODOT's Public Transportation Division as part of its intercity grant program. The POINT service exists to connect towns and rural communities with major transportation hubs and urban centers. ODOT accomplishes this by filling gaps in Oregon's long distance transit network where no public services exist and which would otherwise be unprofitable for private companies. The service functions like a thruway bus service for Amtrak in that it makes direct connections to passenger rail service and sells tickets using Amtrak's system. Chickahominy Reservoir
Chickahominy Reservoir is located near U.S. Highway 20 east of Bend, Oregon, and west of Burns, Oregon, in the United States. It was built as an irrigation reservoir, but is now managed by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife as a recreational fishery. The reservoir is very long and is narrow at points, almost pinched at the center. A dam on Chickahominy Creek in Harney County, Oregon, formed the reservoir. After leaving the reservoir, the creek then flows into Silver Creek, north of Riley. Chickahominy Reservoir was named for the creek that bears the same name, and the origin is uncertain. Speculation exists that members of the U.S. Cavalry, who were fighting in the Bannock War near Silver Creek, named the creek in 1878. In fact, Reuben F.
