Rieko Kodama
, also known as Phoenix Rie, was a Japanese video game artist, director, and producer employed by Sega from 1984 until her death. She is primarily known for her work on role-playing games (RPGs) including the original ''Phantasy Star'' series, the '' 7th Dragon'' series, and ''Skies of Arcadia'' (2000). She is often recognized as one of the first successful women in the video game industry. Kodama began her career at Sega as a graphic designer on arcade games and Master System games, including ''Alex Kidd in Miracle World'' (1986) and ''Phantasy Star'' (1987). The success of ''Phantasy Star'' led her to continue with the series thereafter, including directing '' Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium'' (1993) for the Sega Genesis. The Game Developers Choice Awards are awards annually presented at the Game Developers Conference for outstanding game developers and games. Introduced in 2001, the Game Developers Choice Awards were preceded by the Spotlight Awards, which were presented from 1997 to 1999. ''Altered Beast'' is a 1988 beat 'em up arcade video game developed and manufactured by Sega. The game is set in Ancient Greece and follows a player character chosen by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from the demonic ruler of the underworld, Neff. The Black Onyx
is a 1984 role-playing video game released in Japan, developed by Bullet-Proof Software, with development led by Henk Rogers. It was originally released for the NEC PC-8801, and ported to several other platforms. The Famicom version featured completely redesigned gameplay, a new map, and was retitled ''Super Black Onyx'' (スーパーブラックオニキス). The Game Boy Color port was developed by Atelier Double and published by Taito. The Game Boy Color port added enhanced visuals and included an option to play through the game with the original game's visual style. is a platform game developed by Sega and released in Arcade video game, arcades in May 1984. It was licensed to Bally Midway for distribution in the United States. In ''Flicky'', the player controls the eponymous blue bird and must gather all the small birds called Chirps in each round and bring them safely to the exit. There are cat and lizard enemies which can disperse the Chirps and kill the player, but Flicky can use items on the playing field to protect herself and the Chirps from danger. The idea for ''Flicky'' came from Sega senior leadership, who wanted to exceed the success of Namco's ''Mappy'' (1983). Yoji Ishii and Yoshiki Kawasaki developed ''Flicky'' at Sega over one year.
