Thomas Rickman
Thomas Rickman (8 June 17764 January 1841) was an English architect and architectural antiquary who was a major figure in the Gothic Revival. He is particularly remembered for his ''Attempt to Discriminate the Styles of English Architecture'' (1817), which established the basic chronological classification and terminology that are still in widespread use for the different styles of English medieval ecclesiastical architecture. Early life Rickman was born on 8 June 1776 at Maidenhead, Berkshire, into a large Quaker family. Sir Rickman John Godlee, 1st Baronet (15 February 1849 – 18 April 1925) was an English surgeon. In 1884 he became one of the first doctors to surgically remove a brain tumor, founding modern brain surgery. Early life Godlee was born in Upton, Essex, to a Quaker family, the second son of Rickman Godlee (1804–1871), a barrister at Middle Temple, and Mary Godlee (née Lister), daughter of Joseph Jackson Lister. Thomas 'Clio' Rickman (1760–1834) was an English Quaker publisher of political pamphlets. He was born into a Quaker family, the youngest son of John Rickman (1715–1789), a brewer and the freeholder of the Bear Inn at Cliffe, near (now in) Lewes, Sussex), and Elizabeth Rickman (née Peters). He published political pamphlets and broadsides, contributing to the poetry columns of the ''Black Dwarf'' and other periodicals. Rickman married outside the Quaker faith, and after being disowned by the Society of Friends moved to London, where in 1783 he set up as a bookseller. Biography Rickman was born in Lancashire in northern England and worked as a journalist for BBC World Service TV and BBC Radio 4.
