Rickard Deasy (campaigner)
Rickard Joseph Gerard Deasy (13 March 1916 – 13 July 1999), born in Terryglass, County Tipperary was a prominent farmers' rights campaigner in Ireland, Captain with the Irish army, and a member of the Labour Party. He was President of the National Farmers Association of Ireland between 1961 and 1967, and was the leader of a mass protest by Irish farmers in 1966. Personal life Rickard Deasy was the son of Major Henry Hugh Peter Deasy, founder of the Deasy Motor Car Company, and his wife Dolores Hickie, daughter of James and Lucilla Hickie and sister of Sir William Hickie; he was a grandson of the leading judge Rickard Deasy. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. In 1961, he succeeded Dr. John Nassau Greene as President of the National Farmers' Association of Ireland. Tipperary North was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from 1948 to 2016. The constituency elected 3 deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries It was created for the 1948 general election when the former Tipperary constituency was divided into Tipperary North and Tipperary South. The constituency underwent a significant revision to its boundaries at the 2007 general election. A population of 4,276 in the former Roscrea No 2 Rural District was transferred into constituency from the Laois–Offaly constituency.
