Richmond Ballet
The Richmond Ballet, named the State Ballet of Virginia in 1990 by then Governor Douglas Wilder, is an education and performance institution, founded in 1957. Founding In 1957, the Ballet Impromptu, founded by Richmond natives Robert C. Watkins Jr. and Marjorie Fay Underhill and Donna Comstock Forrest, became Richmond's first ballet company. Later, the Ballet Impromptu became the Richmond Ballet. The Richmond Ballet existed for more than twenty years as a small, civic company until 1975, when the School of Richmond Ballet was created. In 1980, Stoner Winslett became the founding artistic director. In 1984, Richmond Ballet became the first professional Ballet company in Virginia and was designated the State Ballet of Virginia in 1990, by then Governor Wilder. Stoner Winslett
Stoner Winslett (born 1958) is an American former ballet dancer and the artistic director of the Richmond Ballet. In 2014, she was honored by the Virginia Women in History project of the University of Virginia for her contributions to the community. Early life and education Winslett was born in 1958 in Jacksonville, Florida. She began dancing at the age of four, and operated her own ballet studio out of her parents' basement as a teenager. Following her instruction by several ballet dancers in Columbia, South Carolina, Winslett attended the American Ballet Theatre School and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts on scholarship. In her adolescence, however, her height of was too tall for traditional ballet. By the time she was 22, a series of joint injuries suffered as she tried to accommodate ballet dancing to her height had effectively ended Winslett's onstage career. Douglas Wilder
Lawrence Douglas Wilder (born January 17, 1931) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 66th Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994. He was the first African American to serve as governor of a U.S. state since the Reconstruction era, and the first African American ever elected as governor. He is currently a professor at the eponymous Wilder School at Virginia Commonwealth University. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Wilder graduated from Virginia Union University and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He established a legal practice in Richmond after graduating from the Howard University School of Law. A member of the Democratic Party, Wilder won election to the Virginia Senate in 1969. The Nutcracker
''The Nutcracker'' ( rus, Щелкунчик, Shchelkunchik, links=no ) is an 1892 two-act ballet (""; russian: балет-феерия, link=no, ), originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71). Alastair Macaulay
Alastair Macaulay is an English writer and dance critic. He was the chief dance critic for ''The New York Times'' from 2007 until he retired in 2018. He was previously chief dance critic at ''The Times'' and Literary Supplement and chief theater critic of the ''Financial Times'', both of London. He founded the British quarterly ''Dance Theater Journal'' in 1983. He writes that his first morning in New York City was before September 1981. In addition to his roles as critic, Macaulay has written for ''The New Yorker'' and also published a biography on Margot Fonteyn. Philip Neal
Philip H. Neal (born in Richmond, Virginia) was a principal dancer with New York City Ballet. Career He studied from age 11 at the Richmond Ballet School. After studying there, Edward Villella arranged a summer scholarship for him at NCYB's School of American Ballet. In 1985 Philip won the silver medal at the Prix de Lausanne ballet competition. The following year Neal graduated ''magna cum laude'' from St. Paul's School and was a National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts' Presidential Scholar of the Arts and as a consequence performed at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Katarzyna Skarpetowska
Katarzyna Skarpetowska is a dancer and choreographer of Polish descent. She danced with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company from 2007 - 2014, and Parsons Dance Company. from 1999-2006. Her choreography, often set on the Parsons company, is noted for providing a more emotionally complicated contrast to Parson's work. She performed in the Broadway musical METRO at age 15 directed by Janusz Jozefowicz.
