Richard Spiegelburg
Richard Spiegelburg (born 12 August 1977 in Georgsmarienhütte, Lower Saxony) is a German pole vaulter. He is the older brother of Silke Spiegelburg. Biography He won the 1999 Summer Universiade and finished fourth at the 2000 European Indoor Athletics Championships. He then finished sixth at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton and eighth at the 2002 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Vienna. After failing to progress from the qualifying round at the 2002 European Championships he fell out of the international spotlight for some years, but returned in 2005 with a fourth place at the Universiade. In 2006 he finished thirteenth at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg. Athletics is a group of sporting events that involves competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and racewalking. The results of racing events are decided by finishing position (or time, where measured), while the jumps and throws are won by the athlete that achieves the highest or furthest measurement from a series of attempts. Athletics At The 2001 Summer Universiade
At the 2001 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China between 27 August and 1 September. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition. Amongst the gold medallists for the host country were Dong Yanmei, who won golds in the women's 5000 and 10,000 metres races, and 18-year-old Liu Xiang in the 110 metres hurdles. It was Liu's first gold on a world stage and he became the 2004 Olympic champion in world record time three years later.
