Richard Smith (Continental Congress)
Richard Smith (March 22, 1735 – September 17, 1803) was a lawyer and politician who served in the Continental Congress and signed the Continental Association. Richard Smith was born in Burlington, Province of New Jersey, to Richard Smith, a member of the West Jersey Assembly, and Abigail Raper Smith.Gummere, pp. 526, 527 Smith was educated under private teachers and in Quaker schools and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1762 and practiced in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later in Burlington. He was commissioned county clerk of Burlington on December 7, 1762. Smith was chosen as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress from July 23, 1774, to June 12, 1776, when he resigned. Continental Congress
The Continental Congress was a series of legislative bodies, with some executive function, for thirteen of Britain's colonies in North America, and the newly declared United States just before, during, and after the American Revolutionary War. The term "Continental Congress" most specifically refers to the First and Second Congresses of 1774–1781 and, at the time, was also used to refer to the Congress of the Confederation of 1781–1789, which operated as the first national government of the United States until being replaced under the Constitution of the United States. Laurens is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,424 at the 2010 census. The Town of Laurens is in the southern half of the county, north of the City of Oneonta. There is also a village named Laurens, located in the town. History The town was first settled by Europeans around 1773. Joseph Mayall arrived in 1773 about one mile north of the present Laurens village. The raiding party responsible for the Cherry Valley Massacre also pillaged part of Laurens and burned some property. The town was formed from the Town of Otsego in 1810. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Henry Laurens. A resort developed by the Oneonta Mohawk trolley line called Otsego Park was formerly located in the eastern part of Laurens. The Continental Association, also known as the Articles of Association or simply the Association, was an agreement among the American colonies adopted by the First Continental Congress on October 20, 1774. It called for a trade boycott against British merchants by the colonies. Congress hoped that placing economic sanctions on British imports and exports would pressure Parliament into addressing the colonies' grievances, in particular, by repealing what were referred to as the Intolerable Acts. The Congress adopted a "non-importation, non-consumption, non-exportation" agreement as a peaceful means of settling the colonies' disputes with Great Britain.
