Richard Scott Perkin
Richard Scott Perkin (1906 – 1969) was an American entrepreneur. At an early age he developed an interest in astronomy, and began making telescopes and grinding lenses and mirrors. He only spent a year in college studying chemical engineering before he began working at a brokerage firm on Wall Street. During the 1930s he met Charles Elmer when the latter was presenting a lecture. The two had a mutual interest in astronomy and decided to go into business together. In 1937, they founded Perkin-Elmer as an optical design and consulting company. Richard served as president of the company until 1960, then became chairman of the board. The crater Perkin on the Moon was named after him, while Elmer was named after his business partner. Perkin was married to Gladys Frelinghuysen Talmage who became CEO after he died. The Science History Institute is an institution that preserves and promotes understanding of the history of science. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it includes a library, museum, archive, research center and conference center. It was founded in 1982 as a joint venture of the American Chemical Society and the University of Pennsylvania, as the Center for the History of Chemistry (CHOC). Elmer is a small lunar impact crater that is located to the south of Mare Smythii, near the eastern limb of the Moon. This crater is seen at a highly oblique angle from Earth, and the visibility is affected by libration. Elmer lies southwest of the crater Kreiken, and east-southeast of the larger Dale. Charles Wesley Elmer
Charles Wesley Elmer (1872–1954) was an American amateur astronomer and court reporter who co-founded the Perkin-Elmer optical company in 1937. He was born in New York City, and for most of his life he was employed as a court reporter. However, as a hobby he developed a strong interest in astronomy and optical telescopes. In 1936 he met Richard S. Perkin, and the two decided to form an optical business in New York. This would grow to become the Perkin-Elmer optical company, which was officially incorporated on April 19, 1937. Charles Elmer served as the secretary-treasurer of the Perkin-Elmer company until he retired in 1949. He was married to May Custer, the grand niece of General George Armstrong Custer. In 1937 he was awarded the Merit Award by the American Association of Variable Star Observers for his "long continued service and devotion to the activities of the Association".
